Driving from Frankfurt to Prague...How long?...How difficult?

We are considering driving from Frankfurt to Prague. How long should it take? Also, can you take rental cars to Czech Republic?...And should we consider train point to point?

Thank you,

About a month ago we drove from Munich to Prague, via Cesky Krumlov and stayed at Karlstejn and took the train into Prague. For time and routing I would suggest www.euroshell.com, they have a page similar to Yahoo's "Drive It". We used it and it was great. You can take a rental car into the Czech Republic, make sure the rental company is aware of this and that it's on your rental agreement. We crossed into the Czech Rep. from Austria and they DO check (no pun). Feel free to e-mail me direct for info.
As the last post stated, please ask your rental agency if they allow you to take the car into the ex-soviet satellite countries. I am renting a car for a trip through Germany and Austria and both agencies I spoke with said I was not allowed to enter the Czech Republic (among others)with the vehicle. The agencies were Europe By Car and Auto Europe.

My husband and I rented a car from Hertz in Frankfurt and made sure they knew we were driving into the Czech Republic. We drove from Heidelberg to Prague and it took us most of the day! It was an easy enough drive but not too much to look at on the major hiways. The longest part of the journey seemed to be from the border into Prague. Maybe it was just the anticipation!

Car rental: It may depend on type of car rental. We were not allowed to take our rental mercedes over the border..neither could we take it to Italy. I got the impression that if we stepped down to a less expensive rental the rule might be lifted. Does anyone know the answer?
