Driving from Amsterdam to Cologne
We are going to Amsterdam and will go for an overnight stay to Cologne Germany. If we decide to rent a car, do we need a special international license and how difficult would it be to make this drive. We have never driven in Europe. Some people have said it is relatively easy and probably much cheaper than the train.
Rich,

Driving in Germany and the Netherlands is easy, as long as you're comfortable with SPEED - german autobahns have no speed limits on some sections. Stay right unless you're passing.

You do NOT need an international license for driving in Germany or the Netherlands. See:
http://www.germany-info.org/relaunch/welcome/travel/driving.html
and
www.visitholland.com
(cl ick on general information, then travel information)

You can find an overview of signs and driving regulations in the Netherlands (which are virtually identical ton those in Germany) at:
http://www.minvenw.nl/cend/dco/home/data/international/gb/verkeersb_engels.pdf

For an overnight trip from Amsterdam to Cologne, I would take the comfortable ICE trains though. More info at:
http://www.ns.nl/international/international.cgi?International/Countries+and+Towns/Germany/Cologne

Hope this helps,
Andre
