Driving distance from Berlin to Budapest and Berlin to Krakow & can we take the car??
Leaving for Berlin in a few weeks. Have been to Bavaria many times but never to Berlin. We plan to spend from 5-7 days in Berlin (and based on info here there will be plenty to do)Would like to go to Budapest and wonder if there is a problem taking a car into either Hungary or Poland? How many hours by car and how are the roads? Thank you. Johanna

You must advise the rental car company if you are entering these countries. They usually do not let you take Mercedes and some other cars into these countries. When we went to Poland and Czech Republic we had to advise them beforehand and also in Poland we only stayed where the car was in a locked area at night. We really enjoyed the small amount of time we spend it Poland.

Thanks for the help. last summer, I took the train from Prague to Krakow and then to Warsaw and Vilnius and loved it. My traveling partner wants to rent a car so finding these traveling distances and how the roads are ..is a new experience. Thanks

If going to Budapest and Krakow, consider a round trip Berlin-Budapest-Krakow-Berlin (assuming that the car rental company allows it) by going though Slovakia. A slight detour toward the east of the direct route Budapest-Krakow would allow you to visit the Ruthenian churches in eastern Slovakia.

There is a fairly good road connection from Berlin to Krakow, by autobahn all the way. It's around 600 km one-way, so will take about 6 hours including brief stops. The autobahn in Poland (A4) has tolls (16 PLN), payable at toll booths. They take zloty or credit/debit cards. There are no border formalities as both countries are in Schengen (as are other countries you go through to reach Budapest).
Berlin to Budapest is a long way, almost 900 km. Again it's autobahn all the way, passing through Czech and Slovak Republics. Tolls, in the form of stickers (virtual sticker in Hungary) outside Germany.
Budapest to Krakow is around 400 km. So it's not practical to do day trips to either city, and a round tour will require at least a few days.
