Drive time from FCO to Montalcino

We have finally decided to rent a car at the airport and drive directly to Montalcino and we wonder how long it might take. Advice from bobthenavigator suggested the coast road...I plan to order some driving maps, but would love to hear from Fodorites who have done the trip.

Probably around 3 hours. We drove Todi to Montalcino & it was 2 1/2. Todi to FCO is about 1 1/2. Using a quick guess - 3 hours.

Run the program at www.viamichelin.com but input via Grosetto. I have done it twice--depends on traffic--but 3 is the best you can do. Have a good map and that Michelin routing.

Hmmm ! I just ran it and it says 3:23---I would plan on 4 hours and stop for a stiff coffee.

If you don't use the coast road, bypass Roma to the north & head up the Autostrade. The normal cutoff is Chiusi but this road is clogged with buses etc. Cutoff at Orvieto & head due west to SR2, then north. We found this hwy to be almost empty & a great drive.

If you drive like I do though, watch for cabineri. I was pulled over doing 130 km/hr but they just waved me on when they saw I was a tourist.
