Drive Time from Budapest to Vienna

I'm posting this again because I can't see it appear on the forum. Sorry if it's second time! here it is:

The fastest way to go would be the M1 highway, and it would take around 3 hours. The highway is good quality, more lanes going in one direction. Alternatively you can take smaller roads, almost all of them are paved (except farm roads, but you can easily avoid them) and they are of varying quality, but mostly pretty good. I'd recommend taking the M1 out from Budapest, and after you leave the outskirts of the city, maybe take an exit somewhere along the road and continue like that. I would definitely stop at Gyor and Mosonmagyarovar, and some little villages that catch your eye along the way. Amd if you are going during summer, buy some fruits from roadside vendors because the fruits are delicious! Also villages around the Hungarian border usually sell very nice volk-art and other stuff, to the tourists coming from Austria. (I only know about the South-western border for sure) Once in Austria, I'd take the roads less travelled, but then only because I love Austrian villages.

Hi Ed
We did this route last fall. If you go to www.cwlease.com, routeplanner, it will provide a trip tic. It is 239 kilometers or about 150 miles. CW said driving time was about 2 hours and 37 minutes which is probably about right. Just be sure you know exactly in Wien where you are going. We stopped first at Schoenbrun and got into Wien a little later. There are so many one way streets, we were staying within the ring. We finally parked the car in a garage and walked to the pension. We ended up moving the car to a cheaper garage. Did not stop along the way. We left Budapest on Sunday after mass at the Matthyas Church which is a really wonderful old church and we wanted to see the Wien Summer Palace so it basically worked out well except for getting lost on the one way streets. We also spent alot of time at the Palace at their cafe. Both are great cities.

Hello from Vienna!
It is not a very interesting road the M1 from Budapest to Vienna. Better to stop in Szentendre (a little Village 35 km north of Budapest) or Eztergom (a very old Dome is there).
You can stop at Lake Neusiedel behind the border in Austria.
Have you ever been in Austria or Hungary?
Best regards from sunny Vienna
Silvia
As is evident in other messages today and in the past two days, I am working on a trip (two trips, actually) that will cover this distance. I had a trip like this partially planned out for fall of 98, but had to cancel it.

In the materials I collectyed for that trip (and soon hope to update) I had identified a hotel "Klastrom" that looked very appealing, and I had a subjective impression (from general materials sent by the Hungary tourist board) that Gyor might be an interesting place to stop. I hope to be able to report more about it soon (after May 11).

Best wishes,

Rex
