Drive between Munich and Fussen, Where to stop?
We will be driving between Munich and Fussen next week. I was planning on taking the driving route on the following link: http://www.thirdmansystems.com/vacat...chtoFussen.htm
It takes us through Austria, and I'm hoping some good pictures.
I had heard good things about a town called 'Bad Tolz'.
But, if somebody has a better route I'd really appreciate it.
We're leaving in the morning and would like to be in Fussen by late afternoon. My girlfriend and I just want to have a good time, take a lot of pictures, and enjoy ourselves, we're in our early 30's.

Haven't been to Bad Tolz, but Schloss Linderhof between Ettal and the Austrian border is worth a stop.
On our way to Hohenschwangau a few years ago, we had a pleasant lunch in Austria along your route at a place on the Plansee.
Can't remember the name of the restaurant (might have had a hotel, too) but it was towards the western end on the other side of the road from the lake. Nice view of the lake and a little cove where people were sunning, swimming and windsurfing.

We took the same trip (by car) of Romatic Road and stopped over in Wursberg and Rothenberg and then to Fussen. One would need 2 days at each spot. Wursberg was good for sight seeing as well as shopping. Rothenberg was a peaceful stay.....enjoy your trip

I second (third?) the recommendation for the drive by the Plansee. We drove from Oberamergau to Reutte and it was gorgeous. The Plansee is really picturesque, as is the rest of that section of road - probably the prettiest part of the Alps that we saw.

Sounds good to me so far. Yes, Bad Tölz is nice and I would highly recommend to visit this cute town. Been there just two weeks ago and plan to post a sort of trip report here soon (and pics).
Drive the Autobahn A8 Munich - Salzburg to exit Holzkirchen, leave there and drive to Bad Tölz. Visit the picturesque main street and the Kalvarienberg (pilgrim church above the town). I'd calculate 1 - 1.5 hours for that.
From Bad Tölz drive via Benediktbeuern (gorgeous Benedictine convent) to Ettal and continue as listed on the link you gave.

Wow, thanks for your replies, I've been planing this trip for a while and these are some of the best posts that I've gotten.
The pictures from norrisken are really impressive, and from the Octoberfest you were there about the same time last year.
Thanks again, I'll definately take it slow around the Plansee.

We did the drive today following the route posted between Munich and Fussen; beautiful.
I upgraded to a car with a GPS system and I'm really glad that I did, it worked wonderfully. Even on the smaller roads it worked perfectly.
Bad Tolz was a great stop, very cute. Although you can tell it's a up and coming tourist stop. Lots of tourist shops and a fair amount of vistors.
I would have loved to have spent some time at the Plansee but the weather got really bad. We experienced hard rain and hail as soon as we got to the lake.
Fussen is really pretty, a bit too touristy, but a pleasent stop after major cities.
I'll post a more detailed review when I get back.

I'm still building the review.
Actually, I haven't I've just been to lazy to write the whole trip down.
I am going to try to get it up here soon, and try and find a space where I can post some of the pictures (we took over 3K while we were there).

They were taken in late Sept 2005. I'm glad you like them. http://www.thirdmansystems.com/vacation
Those aren't the full size pictures, but I'm looking to post them. I've had some folks ask if I could, they want to use them as backrounds!
