I think bottled water is comperable to what it is in the US. I have had tap water in all 3 cities mentioned and live to tell about it.

Why would you get a belly ached drinking the water in Italy? There are public fountains all over Rome (less so Venice & Florence) where you can fill up your 0.5l bottle with cool running water, so there is no need to carry more than 1 small bottle the entire trip.

Yes the point is that water in Rome could be even safer than yours at home - due to the common European water processing via the Ozone (?) type method that is superior to many systems in US and to which many US systems are changing - i learned this on a tour of my local water plant just after the changeover.

That said, some hotels may have lead pipes so let the water run a bit or perhaps use bottled water in lieu of hotel water.

Some people react badly to even small changes of mineral content in drinking water. Are you such a person?
