Dreary Day in Dingle

After a fantastic few days in Doolin, got to Dingle today. It rained all day and was cold. Walked around town some, visited few shops and had fantastic dinner. But kids (3 young teenagers) were cold and wet. Unfortunately, tomorrow is predicted to be a repeat of today. Kids wanted to see fungie and go horseback riding but weather appears unlikely to cooperate. So what can you do with kids in Dingle in the rain?

If you have the right clothes, you might go horsebackriding anyway, especially if its just the misty kind of rain.

The museums out on the pennisula are fascinating, depending on how old your kids are--there's one with dinosaur bones and one about life on the off-shore island--both on the main coast road. You could also climb around the hills out towards the pointe with the bee-hive huts are--some you can climb inside, and that could be fun in any weather (unless its really muddy, then the kids might enjoy sliding down the hills!). Most are either free or you pay the person who owns the land a euro or so.

thanks tmagyari.

Only museum that came up in my search is Musaem Chorca Dhuibhne Dingle

There are some possibly interesting historic/ archeological sites such as Gallarus Oratory
Kilmalkedar Church
Gallarus Castle
Eask tower

any thoughts on these are appreciated. And there is also
Oceanworld Aquarium

Thanks for any help!

Here's the trip advisor info on the Celtic and Prehistory Museum in Ventry, about 1/2 way between Dingle and the point--they list it as their #1 attraction in the area, and my DH and I enjoyed it. This is the one with dinosaur bones as well as more local history:

The other museum, on the point is the Blasket Island Museum commemorating people who lived on this remote island until the last generation, and their writings. We ended up there when it was too rainy to go to the island itself. Its at the ferry dock for the island boat.

Teens might find both interesting.

As for the archeological sites, I've been to all of them listed above. Galarus oratory is pretty formal, with a good tour and small museum. The others are self-guided, Gallarus Castle you can climb up on and around. Kilmalkedar also is ruins you can climb.

Just drive on out that way. Some of those listed above weren't easy to find, though whatever you find out that end of the pennisula is apt to be historical and offering beautiful views from the hills. Out at the pointe there is much more Gallic spoken. And--no credit cards at most places so bring your euros in from Dingle. Its only 1/2 hour drive, but centuries away. Have fun!!
