Douro region and Madeira

I've been to Portugal twice now (Lisbon, Porto and areas in between) but I did not make it to the Douro region when we were in Porto because it was too far for a day trip. Can anyone recommend an itinerary for a week vacation that covers Douro and maybe Madeira islands or is that too much? Porto again (we love it) and Douro? Any hotels, excursions etc much appreciated.

Go visit the pre-historic stone carvings near Vila Nova de Foz Côa where you sign up for the obligatory tours.

As far as Madeira is concerned: if you have limited time then stay in Funchal, the island's capital. It's a great place with lots of good restaurants and many, many hotels along the newer area to the west of the town. We usually stay in the Hotel Porto Santa Maria, near the old town restaurants, right on the sea and next to the cable car that takes you up to Monte for the gardens and toboggan ride.
