Is early to mid-June too early to be in the Dolomites ? I'd like to hike if the snow is gone . Is this too unpredictable a time of the year ? Or has global warming changed things ?

Well, I don't know what this year has been like, but we were in the Dolomites in early June a couple of years ago. We were able to get in some nice hiking in the gorgeous Alpe di Siusi and the weather was sunny and warm, but the higher elevation trails were still snowy.

We stayed in two places, Castelrotto and Cortina. Lodging/restaurants in Castelrotto were open but just moderately busy (we had no trouble finding a place to stay without reservations) but Cortina was definitely in off-season mode. Mid-june may be better...

I personally think that June (and then September) are ideal times for hiking the Dolomites.

The skiing crowds have gone and the summer holiday people aren't there yet, so you have the place largely to yourself.

Some accommodation places do take a break between seasons so it is best to contact you choice of hotel/guesthouse in advance. I once turned up in mid- June at a place I booked through an agent in Germany only to find them not at home - enquiries with their neighbours resulted me in going to Haus Doris in town, where they had diverted my booking, without telling the agent. Haus Doris turned out to be fine and I would stay there again.

"In town" means in Welschnofen (Nova Levante), which is a terrific base for the exploring the Rosengarten (Catinaccio).

Having been to the Dolomites all 12 months I agree with Harzer, June and September are the best months, especially June.
