It's funny, but I never really thought about how deeply I feel about Paris until reading this thread. I've been fortunate to have traveled all over Europe - big cities and small towns - but Paris remains the only place where I still get choked up and emotional whenever I return. If that makes me "spoiled for life," so be it. I'm making a long overdue visit to Andalucia next month. I've only been in northern Spain in the past. Next year, Paris again, I think...

Most of us ( tourists ) stay in the "best" parts of city for several days without ever venturing to
the " other side of the tracks" .
Paris is huge with many less than attractive areas but so much of the city
is uniquely lovely , its devotees will keep coming back.

locker - many homeless people are not drunk, crazy or drug addicts acting aggressively.
Many of them just want to be left alone for their own private reasons.
Many have to panhandle to buy food, but I've very seldom seen anyone be aggressive about it.
You are jumping to conclusions without knowing anything about these people.

Yes, certainly. I don't think any tourist can claim full knowledge of any large city. Not even all natives can. I wonder how much of New York City Ivanka Trump has personally seen?

The suburbs can be ugly, I give you that, especially the ones you see on the way from CDG airport. Too many ugly high rises. But Paris proper has very few unattractive places. (Even the less desirable neighborhoods like Barbes have beautiful architecture)
I think that's where Paris trumps over cities. While most cities' charm revolve a small well-preserved historic center, Paris's beauty spreads across the whole city.
There's a consistency in the way it was built. You can walk for hours and not find anything ugly.
