Does anyone know of a good hotel in Vienna under $100 a night?

Does anyone know of a good, clean hotel in Vienna which is centrally located with good bathrooms, friendly service and comfy beds for under $100 a night?

http://www.hotels.or.at/beethoven/eindex.htm

Try the Hotel Beethoven, 36 rooms, just outside the Ring. It is around $120 including breakfast, I believe. Not lavish but nice. We had a large corner room that overlooked one of the theatres and it is very near the street markets.

Why don't you take a look at the Altwienerhof hotel via its web site. It is outside the Ring, but I decided to stay there after reading advice from other posters. The costs are less than 100 Euros for a double room - something like 90 Euros.
I have not been there yet, so I cannot tell you anything first hand.
http://www.altwienerhof.at/gb/index.htm

There is a world class restaurant associated with the hotel that is quite expensive, but the hotel itself is small and priced as indicated above.

I recommend highly the Pension Museum. As I recall, its doubles are only about $100 a night, with bath and breakfast and it is the highest category of pension (4-star). It is extremely convenient being almost right across the street from the Volksopera metro stop and only a couple blocks from the in museums and palace; also, that metro line goes directly to the train station. It's cheaper than the hotels in the most central tourist area as it's in the museum quarter/7th district, but IMO that is preferable anyway for ambience and convenience and there are several very cheap good restaurants within a couple blocks (Italian, Greek, etc). They are very nice there and the bathrooms were a lot better than most in that price range.

Had a great stay at the Pension Christina a few years ago. Perfect location. A 10 minute walk to St. Stephen's, and right around the corner (1 minute) from Schwedensplatz, so it was very convenient to the subway and the streetcar. The staff was friendly. The hotel is fairly modern, and the room was medium-sized. Not elaborate or elegant, but perfectly satisfactory for the price. I would stay there again just for the convenient location.

I stayed at the Altwienerhof in August 1999. We paid less than $100 per night last year and with the favorable exchange rates it should be well within your budget. The rooms are a great value for the price and an excellent breakfast is included. It is outside the ring, but a subway station is just a short walk (less than 2 blocks).

Bob, did you ever stay at the Altwienerhof Hotel in Vienna? If so, what is your opinion? Thank you.

Hotel Ibis Wien is two blocks from the Westbahnhof, U-Bahn/S-Bahn station and the Mariahilferstrasse. They have NON SMOKING rooms (big plus if you're not a smoker)air conditioning and their own bar and restaurant within the hotel. Modern high rise type of place, new and clean, but no Old World charm.

It was under $100 when we stayed there, but we negotiated a price after e-mailing back and forth for a time. Rooms were fine, but I'd avoid paying extra for their breakfast buffet -- it was lousy. There are cafes and bakeries close by, go there for breakfast.

Richard,

Pension Nossek is my recommendation. It's right on the Graben so it's accessible to sights, restaurants, metro and they have rooms for about $100. Staff is helpful and friendly.

Adrienne
Richardab:

I wholehartedly second Karen's suggestion of the Hotel Ibis Wien Messe. It's within walking distance of the S-Bahn, and there is a great Spar grocery store also within walking distance.

I just stayed there last week, and I believe that my room was about $70/night. The hotel is extremely well-kept, and looks like it was just opened. I didn't have the breakfast buffet, but it was because I do not like cold cuts and cheese, which is the prevalent breakfast fare throughout Europe. Go to Spar, and get some of the fresh-baked goodies that they have. You'll also save money!

For reservations, go to www.accor.com.

Glad the poster above agrees with me, but the web address listed sounds like a booking agency. Try the Ibis hotel itself at this direct e-mail:

[email protected]

If they claim the hotel is full, THEN try a booking agency. Don't be afraid to negotiate a price. Check out Rick Steve's Vienna book, as he recommends this hotel. If they quote you a higher price than Rick has listed in his book, politely tell them that you think you should contact Rick's webmasters to let them know about the price hike so they can post it online. Worked for us.

Karen:

I'm glad we agree, too!

No, Ibis hotels are owned by Accor. They are one of the world's largest hotel chains. I'm really surprised that you had to go back and forth like that. I simply booked my room on the Accor site, and the rate was perfectly fine to me. I suppose that I might have been able to get a lower rate, but I felt that $70/night was pretty good. They also sometimes have discount coupons and free drink coupons that you can print, as well. If you go there again, there is a Spar grocery store nearby that has an excellent bakery and deli. I went there to get breakfast, instead of getting the buffet at the hotel.

I an earlier post I said I had not yet stayed at Der Altwienerhof. Well I have now, 4 nights.

Here is my candid opinion.
If the weather is warm, you do NOT want a room with windows that open on the street. The hotel is not air
conditioned, which can make it hot. With the windows open, street noise was bothersome until about 4 AM.
The bathrooms are quite nice, with modern fixtures. The biggest drawback I found is that the beds were extremely hard. I am used to sleeping on a firm mattress at home, but these were extra, extra firm. And the TV sets were limited and sort of small. The European version of CNN was the only English channel. But I wasn't in the room long enough to do much more than catch the headlines.
If you have a room with windows that open onto the courtyard, it is a different story. The breakfast is a feast!!! Best one I have run into, with the possible exception of hotel Zur goldenen Ente in Salzburg.
The restaurant connected with the hotel is world class, and very expensive if you order from the set menu. Guests of the hotel can order half board, which is a lesser, fixed menu. (You don't have a choice I believe.) We had a salad, a beef filet, and a desert. The portions were not the gargantuan piles of food you can get in the USA, but the quality was high.
Transportation into the city center was a breeze. A stop for Bus 57A was within 200 yards of the hotel and it went straight to the Ring across the street from the Hofburg. The Gumpendorfer Strasse U-bahn depot was within 125 yards of the hotel. It is one stop from the Westbahnhof where you can connect for the city center, or 6 stops from the
Viener Volksoper, and 3 stops with a change of trains from Schloss Schönnbrunn.

I would add my vote for the Pension Nossek. We were just there 2 weeks ago. Wonderful location, spacious clean rooms, and a very reasonable price.

richardab, sorry, I don't mean to take over your topic here, but I just wanted to post one more response to Rich (my fellow Hotel Ibis enthusiast) and maybe the info will help you too.

Rich, when I contacted the Hotel Ibis directly they claimed they were sold out during the time that I planned to be in Vienna. As you know, it IS a popular place with tour bus groups and business travelers! I contacted an Austrian booking agency and they had plenty of rooms at Ibis, but at a higher rate. I e-mailed that address I listed earlier and asked Ibis if they did in fact sell blocks of rooms to booking agencies, and they confirmed this. For a hotel with a large tour bus clientele, I didn't find that unusual.

The higher price was the result of the booking agency trying to create some extra profit, so when I pointed out that Steves had listed certain prices in his most recent book, they agreed to honor those prices.

Nice place, had a great view from the 12th floor, but IMO their breakfast buffet, which is NOT included in the room price, is terrible. Canned fruit cocktail, lots of undercooked meats and coffee from a machine, complete with phony creamer...again, catering to large groups. Yuck! Just about any place you go will be better than that. I found the Julius Meinrl grocery near the Opera House and bought goodies to have in my room. Will have to look for Spar next time!
