Sandy B.,
If you like to flaunt your money in front of everybody and have your husband tip $100 AMERICAN (as you probably yell to Spanish people) to every single service people go ahead.
In some cultures that is considered rude. By doing that, you are acting in a way that seems like you are making sure "they" know who is the boss by shoving green bills in their faces, so they know their place, they know that they are inferior, and you are superior because you can travel in style, you can afford to waste money and food while people around the world are starving.
I choose not to treat people like that, and I also choose to follow the traditions of the country I am visiting.

By the way, I have never backpacked anywhere, always stay at 5 star hotels, however I do not need to flaunt my money or advertise to everybody that I have money. People know you are well off from your appearance and your manners. It is not important to me that others know I have money to waste, that is tacky!
