Hi Stu (and Laura)--yes, we did go to La Recreation for dinner (the day after we saw you at Cinq Chateaux).
Mark and I had visited Pech Merle that morning and then spent a few hours strolling through St. Cirq la Popie, so this would be the logical time to go to Les Arques. We called the day before and made reservations for 7:30. Mary and Chuck drove down (they were visiting other sites that day) and met us.
We started with Kirs and with a refreshing melon amuse bouche; I had the decadently rich and tasty lobster ravioli entree, then the lamb gateau with aubergine...this was an absolutely fabulous combination; a stuffed squash blossom is traditionally on every main dish plate--I am not sure what it is stuffed with--but it is wonderful. I had a creamy chocolate mousse with a pear puree--rich and delicious. Our wine was an especially wonderful Cahors that went quite well with all of our food.
We sheepishly had told Noelle (our waitress) how "we had read the book" --she was adorable--talkative--made great suggestions for the food and wine. Everyone's meal was presented beautifully and we were all raving about how this restaurant was certainly worth the drive.
Laura--you describe your meal so eloquently!
