Dingle & Kinsale B&B's
Message: We're going to the Dingle peninsula and Kinsale in July. There will be four in our party, so we either need two rooms or a quad. Is anyone familiar with these Dingle B&B's: Alpine Guesthouse or The Old Pier?? They both have accommodations that will work well for us and are very reasonably priced (140 Euros a night.) Everything else I checked ran around 250 - 500 euros/nt.

Also in Kinsale, I'm looking at The Gallery or The Old Presbytery? Anyone have any reviews of these places? Thanks.

Aussie603,

There are a good many quality accommodations in both Dingle and Kinsale, the latter being particularly upmarket as regards pricing.

In Dingle, I can't comment on the Alpine or the Pier, but I can heartly recommend Greenmount House. It's nicely situated a short walk from downtown Dingle, is reasonably priced, euro 25-50 per person, and features attractive rooms and award-winning breakfasts. Greenmount, by the way, has a rather long line of fans on this website. See www.greenmounthouse.com

Concerning Kinsale, you might consider Blindgate House. It's rather expensive (euro 52-75p.p.), but it's very well regarded and considered a most stylish accommodation. See www.blindgatehouse.com.

Another consideration in Kinsale is The Moorings. I've not stayed here for several years, but I have fond memories of the place, as it features clean, modern rooms, splendid views of Kinsale Harbor (ask for a room with a view and a porch), and tasty bresakfasts in a lovely and very sunny dining room which overlooks the harbor. Nice. Another plus is The Moorings location, in Scilly, which is halfway between downtown Kinsale and the must-see Charles Fort. There are some nice restaurants within short walking distance of The Moorings.

Best of luck.

Most B&Bs offer accommodation for 4 at around E140 per night. The going rate seems to be E30-35 pp. On the north coast Dingle peninsula, I've stayed at The Shores. It gets 5 diamonds from AA and is as compfortable as any Hotel. The rooms are in the standard price range. The highest I've ever seen for a B&B (outside of Dublin) was E45pp. It was also the worst B&B I've ever visited. The Glendalough River House. Terrible place.

I have stayed at the Gallery before. I think it was 2000. The location was very convenient but I wouldn't rave about the rooms. The service was very good and I stayed there because the owner's significant other is a jazz musician and I wanted to have a chat with him about jazz in Ireland. We had a great chat in the morning. As I remember, there was quite a bit of street noise at night.

Bill

Bill/ David: That's exactly what attracted me to the Gallery, that the owner was a jazz musician. Both of my teenagers play in jazz bands at school, so I thought it might be neat for them to talk with him. The Gallery would run us 45euros p/p, so that would be 180 euros a night. I'm seriously considering The Old Presbytery in Kinsale, but I have a lot of other inquiries out that I'll wait a little before committing.
FOr Dingle, we can get a quad room at the Greenmount House for 160 euros a night, and it has such good reviews, that I'm tempted to go with them. I found out that the Old Pier is away from town and I think I'd like to stay in Dingle.
We can get a quad room at the Alpine for 140 euros/night. I'm still checking around, but I appreciate all your help. There are so many B&B and Guesthouse listings, I'm having a ball checking them all out. Maria

Aussie:

It might be a little difficult to catch Tom as he is not always there. You would want to inquire in advance. The jazz scene is Ireland is growing, though slowly. Certainly the Guinness Jazz festival in October is huge and you can find some in Galway and Dublin and Cork but Tom was saying that it has been slow to catch on. He's an interesting guy and certainly has a lot to say on the subject. I picked up his first CD when I was there.

Bill

Looking for B & B's? go to the Town and Country Homes website, it is crammed with information about places to stay. Even better get their Guide, which I have just received. You'll find pictures of the properties, prices, (many about 30 Euros, $33 per person)All the information you could possibly need. They have done a wonderful job.

Has anyone stayed at the Captain's Guesthouse inDingletown? I saw the home on R Steve's program but haven't found anything about it through fodors. It appears to be right in town. Any thoughts?

Exactly how far is the Greenmounthouse? It doesn't seem to be listed in town and I like to stay within walking distance to avoid being on the roads after dark.
thanks

Greenmount House is about a 1/4-1/2 mile on the 'old/high' road into Dingle. It's a bit of a hike, but not bad, and has fab reviews. I've passed the Captain's Guesthouse, and it looks lovely, right in town, with a babbling brook in the garden. It's recommended in Alistair Sawday's book.

Would have to agree with Greenmounthouse - just an amazing B&B. It is really not that far to walk back down into the town and the views are just lovely. We were there in March this year and wished we had stayed for longer - Dingle peninsula is beautiful! Enjoy your trip.

I stayed at The Captain's House in Dingle in the spring of 2001. It was very nice, and wonderfully convenient for wandering around the town - it's right there in the heart of things. On the other hand, there's no off-street parking - I had to park in a very narrow alleyway behind the house, and I'm still amazed no one hit my car (and that I didn't hit anyone else's). The house had "character" - lots of interesting items, kind of cluttered together but in a good way.
This past April, I stayed at Emlagh Lodge - it was a bit of a walk to the heart of town, but not too bad. It's at the top of a hill overlooking the harbor, and the house itself is very light and airy - my room had wonderful skylights. On my next trip, I'll probably return here, for the view and the parking convenience.

We have just returned from Ireland. While in Kinsale my husband and I stayed at Landfall House E-mail [email protected]. Margo made us welcome in her very attractive home. We had a large ensuite room with view over the river for 30 Euros per person. She served a lovely breakfast plenty of choices. Her smoked salmon with scrambled eggs were great.

Hi Jag:
I stayed at the Glendalough River House last May. The beds were uncomfortable, the owner was rude. When I called as I arrived, she treated me like an idiot becuase I didn't know where the place was. She never actually talked to us in person, always sent here help. The rooms were not great, waterpressure was, at best, average and it is the most expensive B&B that I have stayed in. Other than that, it was perfect. As it turns out, she's from NY. I've heard similar poor remarks. Choose another place.
Hope that helps.
