You should use it a lot before you go to Europe so you know how to use it. Bring the manual with you to Europe.
The first year I purchased a digital camera, I brought along my old camera for vertical photos, because I didn't know you could turn them 90 degrees.
(I feel stupid just writing that)

I bought a PowerShot SD450 last year and love it. Easy to use and great pictures--yours should be even better.
Make sure you upgrade to at least a 1GB high-speed card. My camera came with a regular speed much smaller card. The extra cost is worth it for fast photo taking and viewing.
You can use the recharger that came with it in Italy--all you need is a $1 prong adapter, not a voltage adapter.
