Digital Camera Uploading Pictures

To transfer images from your camera to the computer, the computer must be loaded with software that permits your computer to recognize the camera. I've never been to a cybercafe that permits this or which has computers loaded with the software specific to your camera. Either take your laptop or extra memory cards (CompactFlash or SmartMEdia) for holding your photos until you return to your homebase computer for the image transfer.

A friend of mine is just now landing in Barcelona and was so concerned about this that he bought a very expensive 256mb card for his digital camera. However, with a little research we established that an increasing number of cyber-cafes and mainline photo shops offer download and CD burning services so he (and you) can store your images on a CD and erase them from the camera's memory. USB connections and imaging software is very common (versatile, apparently universal image reading is built into Windows XP, for example), so all I would do would be to bring my connector cable (USB at one end, maybe particular to your camera at the other.) Ask at most computer shops or big photo shops and I'll bet you have no big problem downloading your pix to a CD-R. You could then upload or FTP them from the CD at any point, plus have the hard copy for a nominal fee.

Jeff, it may be an increasing number, but Murphy's Law guarantees that it won't be the cypercafe that you are in! Also, some of the charges to create a CD are high ($10-20), when for less than $100 you can get a 256mb Compact Flash card, or for $200-500 a device to store between 3-20gb of data.
