We have been using a Sony Cybershot of one type or another for 4 years. We now have the DSC-P8. It is not a substitute for an SLR, however it is great for snap-shots. It is just under $400. Here is a link to a review...

I'd gladly give you some suggestions, but you need to answer for yourself some questions first. Do you want a mini-camera (Canon Elph series) a medium size one or a larger one with large (7x-10x) zoom ? You want fully-automatic and/or manuall operation ? Take a look here http://www.steves-digicams.com/ to give you an feeling for what you should choose between.

A good website for camera reviews.

I am very pleased with my Canon A80. Ease of use and photo quality are excellent--fits in a pocket easily. The Canon Elph was my other choice, but it's too small for my hands.

I recommend the best Canon Elph you can afford. They are small and work well. There is a good website to compare digitals at

Everyone is giving you sites to check out various cameras which is a good idea. My two favorite sites are dpreview.com and megapixel.net.
There have also been several threads about digital cameras on this forum in the past couple weeks so if you put that in the search box you'll get plenty to read on this forums camera preferences.

I love my Elph. It fits (easily) in my shirt pocket, and with a 256mg card I can take over 200 pictures. The best thing about it though is the battery, it lasts long enough to fill the card, preview all of them, delete and retake. I travel with 1 spare battery and 1 or two spare cards.
