Diet Coke or Coke Light

I went into a restaurant in London, looked on the menu and it said Diet Coke so I ordered a Diet Coke. Lo and behold, the waitress brought something called Coke Light in a can looked like a Diet Coke can. To say the taste was revolting is to put it mildly. Looking at the can, I noted it had been manufactured in Germany.

Why would restaurants falsely say they have diet coke and then import stale soda from Germany??? It was obvious they are trying to save money as the Germans must be shipping off their overstocks to England; yet there is a perfectly developed coke bottler in England that serves the real stuff.

Anyway I have become much more cognisant of this now and the only way around it in many stores which have this Coke Light crap is to buy their new Diet Coke Vanilla...it's really good too.

Just don't understand what is going on...

Diet Coke is called Coke Light all over Europe, but it is revolting whatever its name.

xyz123,

You might consider a trip to The World of Coca Cola, in Atlanta. Make sure to visit the Tastes of the World room. There, you will be able to enjoy samples of the Coca Cola products that are sold all over the world, and you will learn that for different countries, Coca Cola slightly alters the taste of its product according to THAT COUNTRY'S preferences.

So no, not all Coke, Diet Coke, or Coke Light tastes the same as what you get in the US. Your Coke Light wasn't stale, it was just different.

xyz123 - you'd be surprised at how quickly coke light becomes addicting. I often come home and am surprised at the taste of diet coke.

I didn't think coke light in germany tastes any different from coke light in the U.S. However I think it's quite funny that the germans find pepsi revolting and it barely sells. As a matter of fact most germans think pepsi is some generic brand. I've been told by germans that they think it's too sweet, like candy. I don't think so. XYZ123, I think you just happened to get a bad can of coke light

LeCanard, Coke?

I would think he/she would say it was something you put up your nose.

DH and I honestly noticed no real difference between Coke Light in Italy and the Diet Coke we are used to drinking. However, our Diet Coke is imported from Puerto Rico, so maybe that's why.

We also drink Diet Coke when in the US, though, and didn't really notice a diffrence from that type, either.

Budman - You're not funny. I despise ALL recreational drug use and I hope fodors has the good sense to delete your ignorant thread.

LeCanard - Careful how you interpret my moniker. You'll never hear me say a kind word about Cool Whip but I have no problem with people's soft-drink affinities.

Good old-fashioned Root Beer happens to be my favorite probably because it reminds me of childhood and my mother. A Root Beer float was her favorite secret indulgence on a hot summer night and she always enjoyed sharing this delectable delight with me. I still enjoy it.

Cherry Coke also conjures childhood memories of my favorite art-deco soda fountain in a pharmacy near the family home in Ohio. The pharmacy and the fountain are long gone but the memories of that sweet flavor combination remain.

For me, nothing goes better with my DELICIOUS slice of Rome or Venice pizza than an ice cold glass of Italian Coca-Cola. I find it's sweeter in Italy and I like it. I don't drink much Coke in America and I've never tried any diet product in Europe. Why would I? Living well is the creed I live by every day.

I have to chime in here because I for one LOVE coke light! I much prefer it to the diet coke we get in the states. One of the highlights of travel for me is cracking open that first can can of coke light! I wish I could get it here. I guess it's all just a matter of personal preference. I am headed out to the UK in 4 weeks! Coke light here I come!!

I believe one of the main differences is that Coke light is made with saccharine and DietCoke (US) is made with aspartamane. I prefer a Perrier myself...........

If I remember correctly, Coke Light has some calories unlike Diet Coke which has no calories. I did not care for the taste of Coke Light at all amd found myself just drinking water most of the time (which is probably better for me anyway).

Does anybody know if Coke Light use aspartame or is it sacharin based? That might account for the difference in taste.

Budman : "I would think he/she would say it was something you put up your nose. "

Au Contraire !
I even had coke at lunch today.

I only can't imagine myself complaining about a coke - unless when being served a pepsi , of course .

xyz123,
It must have been a pretty fancy restaurant to have the privilege of having coke served in a can.

Most European restaurants serve coke in a glass bottle -- at least the one's I've been in. You get the canned stuff at the "take away" place.

We found Coke products invariably at the high cost end of the drinks menu in Englans and in Italy. So, we avoided them & stuck with water and the occasional ubiquitous Fanta Orange & Lemonata. I admit I'm fascinated by the discussion of how these products are made to different tastes...I did notice cans of Fanta Orange in the US taste closest to what we got in Europe. Bottles of the stuff are very different, in a bad way! Why are so many US softdrinks now SO sweet?

I drink a lot of D-Coke in the US and can't say I was put off by the taste of Coke Light, though I typically had it first thing in the morning if I couldn't find coffee some where.
NYCFoodsnob: I hope you were just kidding about deleting Budman's post.

... Oh, yes, NYFoodSnob, and your thoughts of cherry cokes (maybe with lime when with that special one) evoke great memories. Now, lets just test a few memories about Cool Whip - what about the Loud kids' backyard brawl?

Feeling a tad threatened there, Insipid, I mean Intrepid. The real shame is you beating up on an old (but sexy) broad. Still mad at me for criticizing some of your incoherent writing?

I LOVE being pre-pubescent at my age. And, speaking of rambling and needing recognition, I counted 271 threads from you just this month. Get a life pal.
