Devon and Dorset: Where to Base?
#21
After the A30/35 anyone for the A 303?>>
oh yes, another doozy, ribeirasacra, though it too has been widened over the years, except the stretch around Stonehenge where the traffic is at its worst of course. However last time I drove past they did finally appear to be doing something about it - and not before time.
<<Roads in Devon look ok to me.>>
looks like the A30 on a good day - the cornish do like to hold onto their old cars for as long as they can.

Torquay we also liked, for an "English Riviera" (and its famous much beloved Palm Trees: https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2...trees-uprooted)
Victorian seaside resort very nice - not your typical crumbling old fading tacky British seaside resort - and the original Fawlty Towers Hotel from the popular TV series - and Dukey since I think you are probably a devotee of Dame Agatha Christie Torquay was her birthplace and where she grew up. The Dame Agatha Christie Mile walk with special tributes to Torquay native thus may be of special interest to you.

Anyway Torquay for something different from ancient villages and towns.

"Bovey Tracey in Devon has a wonderful art centre, bring a big wallet."
I'm actually beginning to consider that "big art centre" known as Amsterdam to which we haven't been for a while.
It is tempting to fly there rather cheaply from Edinburgh for a couple of days. Decisions, decisions...

I feel that for the few days allocated for this trip into English quaintness. Some suggestions are asking the OP to travel far away from the original idea of vising Salisbury.
Thanks for the tip of the A303. The last time I drove part of the A303 was in 2011. Getting from Portsmouth to North Devon. "Centuries" ago I lived and worked in the area. In the intervening years the road had not changed much.
I am hoping to get to the same parts of the UK in 2017. So look out for a Spanish registered car it could me me!

ah well, I can immediately see the mistake you made ribeirasacra. You were starting in the wrong place. There are frankly some journeys that our road system does not intend people to make, and that's one of them. Worth it when you get to North Devon though - I love it up there.
