Deutsche Bahn Strike Nov 7-10
Deutsche Bahn is on strike this weekend. The strike runs from now until 4:00AM Monday, Nov 10.

Yeah, I saw this yesterday on the MUC airport website and <B>thanks for posting the info and links here</B>. I am assuming this is going to be "it" for the month of November. Hope so since I have rail reservations for later this month.

If you fly into MUC the strike will not affect you as the S8 suburban train runs on its normal schedule into town (every 20 minutes). Other suburban train lines run on a "strike schedule", i.e. just one train per hour.
Which means that on the central crosstown underground line, you still have a S-Bahn every 5-7 minutes.
But as subways, trams and city buses (and all trains from other railway companies, e.g. on the Munich-Salzburg- Vienna or Munich-Prague main lines) are not affected, the impact on visitors is rather marginal.
In fact, it is quite surprising how many long-distance ICE services are still running..

Yes, I'm travelling from Garmisch to Lindau on Wednesday, 12 Nov. I'm lucky, though, that the Meridian and Alex regional trains are not affected by the strike.
I'll be travellilng from Lindau to Zürich on Saturday, 15 Nov, and that is a DB ICE, so that could be a problem. If there is a disruption, I plan to take a bus or something to Bregenz and try to go onward from there. Or maybe just a Meinfernbus.

Wonder how those discounted tickets are handled - can they be used on other trains - some mainline trains will run - could they be used on them - I expect the few running trains to be very crowded.
Years ago I would have said European trains so reliable but now with a spate of strikes across Europe you never can be sure of getting where you're going on the day you want to go!
I guess with some leaders pushing austerity so much strikes are more and more bound to happen - yesterday it was Belgium, today Germany and I hear around Thanksgiving Italian trains will be on strike!
and in France it seems to be, after some lengthy drawn out walkouts the past year that strikes are at times more likely than trains running.

We're going to Stuttgart on Monday the 10th for a Michael Buble concert. If the strike goes until Monday 9 am (as we had read yesterday), we'll take a late morning train to avoid the crowds on the trains right after 9. If for some bolt-out-of-the-blue reason there's a strike on Tuesday the 11th when we need to get back, we'll have to find a combo of buses to get us to Freiburg and from there we can catch the bus to the Basel airport and then the city bus home.

It's a bit of a charade as this strike has not been about wages, working hours or similar. But about the principle whether or not within one large company (Deutsche Bahn) competing trade unions have to agree on one tariff or not. The boss of the trade union which initiated this strike now is as popular as a hybrid of Sadam Hussein and GWB in Germany..

1. The stike ended Saturday morning (as written twice above)
2. During the strike, all discounted tickets were valid on ANY running train. Refund was possible too.
3. There is no meinfernbus between Lindau and Zurich, but between Friedrichshafen and Zurich and Basel.
4. Trains between Lindau and Zurich are managed by Swiss Federal railways (engines and drivers) and Austrian railways. They are not directly affected by DB strikes. Some timetable changes occured, however; but there was a train connection every hr.
