How old are your children, what genders, and what are their interests? My three kids (ages 14&11 boys and age 9 girl) travelled all over Denmark in June of '98. What parts of Denmark will you be visiting and how long will you be staying? I can give you a lot of suggestions if you give me a little more info.

Anna

Let' see. In Copenhagen, take them to Tivoli at night. They'll love Tivoli. Cool Fireworks on Saturday nights (they roll their own, I hear) There is currently a special running on either Learning Channel or Discovery called Top Ten Thrill Parks. Tivoli ranked #9 or 10. Kids can run around and enjoy crazy rides (some of which they don't have in the US) While you sit and enjoy a concert and relax. Good restaurants, including a Hard Rock Cafe right next door. And they will be the only teens at their school with a Hard Rock Copenhagen T-shirt. Climb the spiral staircase on the OUTSIDE of the steeple at Our Savior's church. A short bus ride from the center of town. The Ripley's Museum and Wax Museum are expensive but free with a Copenhagen Card. (I believe the info on the Copenhagen Card is at www.woco.dk) I recommend getting a Copenhagen Card for everyone just for the fact that you can flash it to hop on any bus or train within a several-mile radius of Copenhagen and you don't have to worry about the zones or how many times to clip your card in the machine. It also gets you into several attractions for free. See Fredricksbørg palace in Hillerød ( get there by train from Copenhagen) and Kronbørg palace in Helsingør (train from Hillerød or from Copenhagen). We did both castles in the same day and were back in Copenhagen by 6PM. The crown jewels at Rosenborg Palace in town are not as impressive as the British Crown Jewels but they are pretty, and the big silver lions in the throne room on the top floor are cool. If either kid has any interest in WWII, see the Danish Resistance Museum. It's free and full of fascinating information. If you must see the Little Mermaid, she is a short walk from the Danish resistance museum. If anybody needs to check their e-mail, there is an internet computer in the media room at the national Museum (free admission on Wednesday or anytime with a Copenhagen card). Also lots of cool stuff in the museum. In Copenhagen we stayed at the Cab-Inn Scandinavia. The kids loved our compact little "cabin" with bunks and folding tables and a shower that turned on from the sink. The price was right too (hotels in Copenhagen are expensive). There is a castle on the island of Fyn built on a foundation of oak trees in the middle of a lake. It is south of Odense (Hans Christian Andersen's home town). I can't remember the name of it, but they also have a park there with a large maze and a treetop walk (catwalks suspended from tree to tree). A real Count and Countess still live there with their two kids and there is a pretty neat collection of historic weapons there. Also a museum of old cars, trucks, bicycles, motorcycles, and airplanes that my kids liked. There is a cafeteria there with good Danish food or you can picnic on the grounds. Skip Legoland because you're kids are too old, unless you want to bop in there quickly in the evening after 6 when admission is free and look at the cities and towns built out of Legos with working trains, drawbridges, locks and dams. The kids did enjoy those but there is not much else to do in Billund. The Legoland hostel was pretty nice and right next to a campground where the kids got to ride ponies and 4-wheelers and play on the moon bounce. Outside of Copenhagen we stayed in HI Hostels. They were all very nice and not too expensive. I think their website is www.danhostel.dk. E-mail me if you need more info or if you have a better idea of which direction you want to head from Copenhagen and where you want to visit.
Anna covered about everything I would have mentioned. I'd just like to add that Denmark is about the best place to take your kids to...very friendly people, almost everyone speaks English, everything is clean, & it's just a fun place to be. Go to Tivoli 1st, so when you're kids beg you to go back again you'll have time to do it. Frederiksborg Castle is a must see & the town where it's located is also a good place to spend a couple nights (Hillerod).
