At the top of the funicular there is a beautiful church, Roman ruins and a view clear to the French Alps.

At the base of the hill between the hill and the river lies the medieval part of the city. Old churches back to the 1200's and a magnificent little street with history and bars. A lot of very good restaurants in that area as well.

US

I visited Lyon as a day trip and saw quite a bit in one day because it's fairly compact and easy to get around. I think I did almost all of the things mentioned above -- first I took the funicular up the hill to see the view and basilica, then walked down and strolled around Old Town, had lunch, walked across the river and around the main plaza to see the Hotel de Ville and fountain sculpture by Bartholdi, then visited both the textile museum (not texture, it's about historical clothing and textiles--it is one of the best in the world, that's true--I was a textiles major in college so it was particularly interesting to me, but might not be to everyone; also all the signs are only in French) AND the decorative arts museum which is right next door. That is a very good museum also. After that, I walked around a bit and had a light early dinner before taking the 7 pm TGV back to Paris.

Things I didn't have time for given my priorities, which you may, were the Roman ruins and taking a tour of a silk factory (I really wanted to do that but it was a little farther out of town central, so I didn't).

If the search is working, try it -- there are tons of posts (go back a year, even). My fingers are too tired to type it all again!

In short, I would advise starting at the top (Fourviere, Roman Ruins) and working your way down (Hotel de Ville, shopping, etc.)
