Zaanse Schans is an easy short journey from Amsterdam and only need take up a few hours - there are several windmills, one of which will be working in the free outdoor area and there is a museum of the Zuider Zee area and history that charges admission (museum card accepted) - take a train to Koog Zaandijk train station and get a map there at the ticket window or in vending machines out front or just follow the signs about a half-mile thru a rather industrial area to the windmills - and yes to see a grouping of behemoth windmills is great.

Kinderdijk has many more windmills and IMO is much more awesome but also harder to get to by public transportation, being in a rather isolated area - it is near to Delft so could be incorporated into that day trip - it is also close to Rotterdam, my favorite day trip of all dutch cities but not the old-world romantic look most are looking for but a fascinating city all in all.

I find it amazing that that you cannot cancel one or two nights this far ahead (August!) and get a full refund. Every hotel I've every stayed lets you cancel 30 days out (at worst, many refund a week out). What hotel did you reserve?

From The Hague you can also take a tram direct to Delft so unless wanting to see more in The Hague than the average tourist - a few hours is enough to do the Mauritshuis and old royal palace area - you could easily do both Den Hague and Eldft in one day - returning to Amsterdam by train from Delft - trains also link Dleft and Den Hague constantly in a few minutes, faster than the slow tram.

I too like Scheveningen - the classy seaside resort on the North Sea - in season lively day and night. You can stop at the world-famous Peace Justice Center or whatever it is they call that place where they put tyrrants from all over the world on trial - you can take a group tour of the inside and it is on the way by tram to Scheveningen - served by two separate tram lines - walk from one end to the other and hop the other tram back to Den Hague centrum.

It´s Vredespaleis in The Hague - interesting building. From there, you can walk towards Noordeinde - maybe visit the Panorama Mesdag on the way. http://panorama-mesdag.com/
Lots of shops, restaurants on Noordeinde.

Many folks enjoy Madurodam where all of Holland is re-created in miniature - very very popular with Dutch and very famous. Catch a tram there and then keep going on that tram I believe to Scheveningen.

Kinderdijk is easy to get to by car - head for Gouda, a nice nice old town famous for its cheese and drive thru the countryside to Kinderdijk - if at all active it is also a very easy bike ride of say 10-12 miles one way - rent bikes at Gouda's train station and get maps at the Tourist Office (VVV) for a memorable day trip - once in Kinderdijk you can only walk or bike thru the long string of windmills.

Gouda is a nice town!
