DAY TRIPS? PARIS POSSIBLY?
Hello- I was wondering about others successful day trips. I am staying with relatives in London and travelling alone on day trips. I haven't been able to get a good reservation in Paris and was wondering if a day trip from London isn't just absurd with three hours each way. I have been to London several times at this point but never been to Stonehenge- is that going to change my life and be worth it? Also, Bath for the day? Anything would be great, I just started a new job and I haven't had the time to plan as much as I would like. I leave tomorrow evening! Thanks for all your help!!

Good idea, but I think you would get a better day trip if you stayed in England.
Why not try Bath? It is a pretty city with a lot of history and there won't be too many tourists around at the minute. If you want to get a cheaper ticket to Bath and back, try www.thetrainline.com who will book the ticket, reserve a seat, take off £1 for booking via the internet and have the tickets posted on to your hotel or have them waiting at the train station (Paddington.)
If you don't book ahead, even by a day, it will be more expensive. These booked-ahead tickets do mean you have to stick to the dates and times usually. Alternatively, wait till you get here and ring 0345 222333 and book via the phone, but DO book ahead if at all possible.
Further afield, there is York. It is only 1 hr. 50 mins away on the train, and will give you the chance to see a bit of life outside London. Again, book ahead and get a Daypex ticket. (www.gner.co.uk) but I think you might need a full week for that.

I think doing Paris as a day trip would be way too much. I could see taking the Eurostar if you were going to stay there 2 or 3 days, but 1 day would be just to wasteful of your time in Europe. I was even tired of the 1-1/2 hour day trip to Bath, but it wasn't too bad. Bath is a really great idea. It's a beautiful town with lots to see. Great shopping area too! I would definitely go back again!

A day trip is awesome to Paris. Yes, it's 3 hours away but is worth it. Make sure you take the Chunnel. You get to see the English and French country-side. I started off really early in the morning from Waterloo. Bought everything I needed there (museum pass and metro pass) and was set. I came back in the evening. It was really cool - kinda of like commuting to work. In fact lots of British folks are commuting there and back for work! So this trip should be easy if it's for pleasure!

Hi:

I too have done paris on a day trip and yes, you have to get up early. But if you have the energy to do it then go ahead. I found it to be a great way of getting a taste of the city in anticipation of returning for a more extensive visit, which I just did.

When I went I spent the whole day in the Louvre and took a short stroll near Notre Dame and the surrounding area before heading back to Gare du Nord.

Have fun!!!

Another guarded vote for yes. We did it via the Chunnel, but my husband is a train nut who considered the ride to/from Paris the purpose of the trip! Since I had spent ten days there already (without him) I didn't feel too deprived on the one day visit. Take the earliest train you can, and take the latest (or next to last, just in case) back. They even offered a one-day-return fare when we went which was almost reasonable.

We spent the day walking, walking, walking, and just enjoying the city (as I said, since I'd already spent time in the museums, I didn't feel too deprived). It's certainly do-able given the limitations. You will want to return.

If you want someplace closer, York was a great destination. Lots to see and do, and much closer via rail to London.
