Salzburg is a nice day trip to take - I think its only 3 hrs from Vienna. There's a big castle that overlooks the entire town that you can explore and dine at, as well as visit Mozart's birthplace & museum, visit the main cathedral there (I don't remember the name), and take a Sound of Music tour.

Catch an early train to Melk for the abbey. There are boats that run from Melk to Krems. This is the Wauchau valley of the Danube and there are also bike tours that run along the stretch from Melk to Krems. Can get here by hourly trains from Vienna.

The Mauthausen concentration camp is another hour by train. Trains stop at St. Valentin, and there you change to a local train to Mauthausen.

George,
I'd think twice about making Salzburg a day trip. I mean, really - your're three quarters of the way from Vienna to Munich at that point already. Salzburg has so much to offer and is so much more enjoyable at a relaxed pace.
If you do overnight in Salzburg, take a different route back to Vienna if that's where you are bound. I caught a train headed to Graz (and if I had had an extra day to spend, I would have spent it in Graz) and at a town named Leoben changed trains to double back to Vienna. The scenery throughout was spectacular, going through the Alps, especially through the Semmering Pass just before descending to the plains that lead to Vienna. A detour, but a worthwhile one.

Budapest has so much to offer that a day trip would not do it justice. I agree with the ones who say Wachau Valley--stop and eat at small restaurants and sample the local wine; also in the Vienna Woods. A day trip that you could do is Bratislava, just one hour from Vienna in Slovakia. It has some interesting site-seeing and the prices for china, crystal, etc. are much cheaper than Vienna.
