Day trips from Santa Margherita

We will be spending a week in SM. Aside from Cinque Terra, what are some day trips that would be interesting? We will be using the train system for transportation.

Don't you DARE skipping Portofino! After all, it is regarded as one of the charms of Europe. I don't think there is a train there, we took the boat from SM.

On a warm, sunny day you should keep on to one of the small, charming beaches beyond Portofino that the boat goes to. Take your swim suits.

From SML you can walk to Portofino. It is only about 3 miles. You can also take the local bus. They run frequently and are dirt cheap.

A friends and I were on the Italian Riviera this June - we stayed in Camogli and Nervi.

I would recommend a day in Genoa. The city is undergoing a major clean up - narrow street being made into pedestrian malls, palazzos being restored. We had wonderful guide. The city was a real delioght - especially in light of all the negative reviews I had read about Genoa.

Another great day trip - San Fruttuoso - an abbey on a small cove between Camogli and Portofino. It can be reached by ferry or by hiking.

Our guide mentioned that most locals find Portofino overhyped and overpriced - the locals prefer Camogli.

Sestri Levante is beautifully situated on two bays - have lunch or drinks at Vis-a-Vis.
