Day Trips From Rome

Any advice as to what towns might make a good day trip? I have heard that Orvieto & Orte are beatiful places to visit. Any advice would be appreciated. The trip truly will be a day trip (spending every night in Rome.) Thanks, Kate

We took a day trip to Pompeii and liked it. You can do it on your own by train, or with a tour. We went with a tour (Caranti tours, booked through our hotel) and liked it - see my report just a few posts down. We also got to visit Naples and Sorrento. They have a similar trip to Capri as well. Cost about $85 per person and includes lunch.

Hi
I'm planning to do a daytrip to Pompeii as well in a few weeks, but I'll be doing it on my own by train from Rome to Pompeii via Naples.
If you want details on how to do this, I have them in my Rome file; email me.
We flipped a coin between Spoleto and Orvieto (Spoleto won). Both are an hour train ride away, and nice examples of "hill towns". Ostia Antica sounded fascinating to me, but my daughter was a little burned out on ruins at that point.

Pompeii sounds like a pretty long travel day to me, especially with Ostia so close.

Bob the Navigator can probably recommend a dozen good options. Where ya at, Bob?

We found Ostia Antica to be absolutely enthralling. Anzio, about 30 miles down the coast, is an interesting town, too, with its battle museum and American and British cemeteries, but also just a lively, pretty coast town.

Hi
first suggestion I've seen for Anzio as a daytrip from Rome.
Do you know the details on going there by train, and how to get around while you're there?

Hello Kate,

Lots of good ideas already. I'd add ASSISI - 2 hours by train. A must-see IMO!

Steve

I second the vote for Subiaco. It's not too far from Rome - an absolutely beautiful church built right into the mountainside. The church has equisite frescoes, even one of a young pre-saint Francis, who made a pilgrimage there himself.

Good evening, Kate
Would add Assisi to your list of day
trips. With a change of trains at
Foligno the trip takes about 1 hr 50 min
the straight thru direct take about 2hr 20min. That makes sense but that is
what the schedules show.....
Richard of LaGrange Park, Il..
