Day trips from Rome
Hi,
I'm traveling to Rome this April and I don't know where to look to book day tours of cities such as Rome and Venice, and how to book day trips from Rome to Pompeii or Naples/Capri. Anyone have any advice?

Thanks in advance.

I have always thought of Pompeii as too far to day trip from Rome - - six hours round trip by bus or train. Maybe do-able in a car; otherwise I would re-locate south.

Florence is a more reasonable day trip than I used to think. 95 minutes by train, and you won't really need a guide there. A great walking city to explore for a day, if your overall itinerary isn't taking you north from Rome for a few days.

Best wishes,

Rex
Hello Rishi,

The main companies offering tours of Rome and day-trips from Rome are
BR>
VASTOURS
www.adv.it/vastours/english
APPIAN
www.appianline.it/panorama.htm
CARRANI
www.romeguide.it/CARRANI/default.html
GREENLINE
www.romeguide.it/greenline/greenline_eng.htm
AMERICAN EXPRESS (no website)
Piazza di Spagna
110 CITY TOUR (Stop 'n' Go)
www.romavision.it/110citytour.htm
ARCHEOBUS (Stop 'n' Go VIA APPIA Tour)
www.romavision.it/archeobus.htm

Pompeii or Capri are probably best done independantly, by train to Naples (- with an early start), - as the usual critiscism of coach tours there is that they don't allow enough time.

Let me know if I can be of more help ...

Steve

I am respectfully going to disagree with Rex. I recently visited Pompeii as a day trip from Rome. The trip was 2 hours to Naples and maybe 30 mins on the circumvavig.. (sorry I forget the name and don't have a reference here).

We left Rome on a 8.06 train, got to Pompeii by 11.00, and then had until 5.00 to explore. We decided to purchase a guide book for 5 euro, (which we did from the entrance, no doubt paying more than necessary), which provided a very good tour of the sites, including some not in the audio tour. We returned to Naples for a very quick dinner, then a 7.30 train back to the termini in Rome. We got back at 9.30.

This is getting long winded but in short if you have limited time, want to see Pompeii then it is a day trip that is very possible and well worth doing.

In terms of booking, I bought tickets on the day, there are trains to Naples every hours, however you could purchase them the day before your trip at the station, or even earlier there did not seem to be any problem. The circum... was a normal subway type system.

I thought the sights were amazing and well worth seeing, if deciding whether to visit YES is the answer. We started looking for a tour, decided to do it ourselves and it was the best decision.

Sorry I do not have any other day trip ideas but I an not an experienced traveller.

Tivoli is the most popular 1 day excursion from Rome. Some 22 miles from the city had two principal sights the Villa d'Este a rennaissance villa renowed for its gardens and villa Adriano, a vast Roman era villa and grounds created by emperor Hadrian. (I just visited them Thursday...)You can take a train from the Termini.
