Day trips from Montalcino

Hi,
My husband I will be staying 5 days in Montalcino. We are renting a car out of Siena, so that will be our means of transportation.

Can anyone recommend a few day trips? It will be my second time to Italy and my husbands first.

Thanks in advance
Sarah

Hi S,

I spent 3 wonderful days in Montalcino in Sept. I wish I had been able to stay longer!

There are so many towns to visit nearby. Montepulciano, Pienza, San Quirico d'Orca, Bagno Vignoni. Two highlights are Sant Antimo (where the monks preform the services in Gregorian Chant) and Monte Oliveto (famous for frescos).

Of course there is wine and cheese tasting, and wine tasting at the wineries, and wine tasting at the direct selling shops in Montalcino and the Fortezza.

A must: have at least one dinner at Grappolo Blu in Montalcino. Reservations are usually needed. You will probably end up there more than once, as I did! Oh, and be sure to have the chocolate "flan" desert, with a Moscato. Heaven....

Buon viaggio!
