we spent 4 days in barcelona this summer. we visited the monastery, and in fact witness a wedding as we were there. We ended up buying breads, and cheeses in the gourmet deli that the monastery has, and made sandwiches ovelooking the beautiful sights. we then headed to girona, which is a gorgeous medieval town. walked around and even got lost. Very cool !!
We then headed to gimenes (about 35 km from france) where the salvador dali museum is. very weird, bu definetly worthy.
make sure you leave enough time to visit barcelona. lots of museum there. if you decide to eat the olimpic port, make sure you go to " el congrero loco" (means crazy crab) . great seafood. you will not be disapointed.
We were just in Barcelona for 4 days and really enjoyed it a lot! (Spent nearly all of our time in and around the Old City.)

We took the obligatory trip to Montserrat though we found it to be *very heavily* visited by busloads of tourists. Rather disappointing. We, too, noticed a wedding in progress. (What a drag to have hundreds of tourists wandering through your beautiful church wedding in shorts and teensy tank tops...)

Our overall response was that we didn't feel that it was a waste of time. (Train ride outside the city was nice, to see a bit of the countryside.)

I think if we had to do it over, we'd go to a small town like Girona or Sitges. If you're Catholic, it would likely have more significance as well...
Try Tarragona, which is about 1 hour by train from B'lona. It is a lovely town, touristy but in a low-key way, with a great Latin history museum and lots of cobbled streets as well as a beach. I loved it there, perhaps because we had no idea what it really would be like. It very much is a place for kicking back and taking it easy. It has a ramblas which ends at a high belvedere over the bay, and there are nice places to eat in the numerous squares.
