We loved Tivoli and our visit to Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa. If you are interested in Roman ruins, you could visit Ostia Antica for a day trip. After some time in Rome (which we love) it is nice to get out into the countryside and visit the surrounding areas.

If you want more info on either place, e-mail me and I will give you detailed instructions on how we got there, etc.

Depends on how long you'll have in Rome. If you've not been to Rome before and have less than 5 full days I'd not recommend any day trips.

If you've more time than that possible day trips include
-Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa
-Ostia Antica
-Assisi
-Orivieto and/or Perugia

If you find the ruins of ancient Rome of interest I'd visit Ostia Antica. Hadrian's Villa is a good choice for the same interest.

If you've a religious interest you might well choose Assisi.

Tivoli used to be interesting, though not too high on my priority list. It's been a while since I've been there. I seem to recall recent reports calling into question the maintenance of the fountains and general overall condition? If anyone can confirm my recollection then Tivoli might well be beyond the point of recommendation.

twenj

We visited Villa d'Este in May. It was fabulous. We didn't get to Hadrian's Villa because we only had a half-day and had to choose one or the other. The gardens were beautiful, the fountains--sort of overwhelming. I had no idea there would be so many! It was a postcard-pretty day which made us take too many photos...but it was so beautiful we just couldn't stop. People watching was great, too. (I really enjoyed watching the European teenagers on school trips.)

Okay Diane -- how about some of those photos for the "fodorite pages"?
http://geocities.com/dhfsbf/fodorite/fodor.htm
Thanks to everyone who's responded.
We will have almost four full days in Rome (arriving by overnight train in the am) before leaving for Florence and Venice.
I was exploring the possibilities for day or 1/2-day trips for the last day in Rome just in case we will get tired of a busy city.
Villa d'Este sounds interesting - can it be "done" in half a day? Can it be accessed by public transportation?

Hello YS,

To get to Tivoli by public transport, take the Metro Line B (direction 'Rebibbia') out to PONTE MAMMOLO (the penultimate stop).
Buses leave from there to Tivoli every 10 minutes. (The bus station at Ponte Mammolo is on 2 levels, - take the escalator to the upper level.)

Hope this helps ...

Steve

P.S. I'd say don't miss Villa Adriana too! IMO it's a must-see ...
