It is probably "doable" but there is so much to see in Budapest that you may leave feeling quite unsatisfied with the experience because you didn't have enough time.
FYI--the Hungarian timetable in English is at www.elvira.hu. From a quick glance there, the train ride appears to take an average of 4 hours or so each way--not worth a go and come back in the same day to me.

It is not 4 hours each way the time table I gave you in my earlier message is correct as I did the train trip from Vienna to Budapest last year We
used that on line time table. We flew into Prague bought all our trains tickets in Prague. Someone came with us to make sure we bought the correct ones as we were also doing a few train trips around the Czech republic. I can't remeber how much the train tickest costs from Vienna to Budapest. We did a week in various places in the Czech Republic. Then took a train from Brno to Vienna ,spend a couple of days in Vienna and took the train to Budapest.
