Normandy, Brittany (Mont St.Michael) Loire Valley, Bordeaux, Dordogne
Two 75's doing bucket list. Husband native French speaker. This is a mixture of never-seen and re-visiting favorite places. Two possibilities: stay in private apt.,/ B&B for one week in eech area, but would like small tour or car and knowledgeable guide . (We get lost...a lot).
Welcome any suggestions or input or other ideas about time to spend in each area. Many thanks.

You might want to look at my trip report for Normandy and Brittany; just click on my name to find it.
You'll need a car for the Dordogne, and one for Brittany if you intend to see some of the calvaries in western Brittany. It might be best to rent a car for your entire trip, although some rental agencies will not rent to individuals over 70 or 72. On the other hand, I believe that Renault and Peugeot sell/buy back system does not have an age limit.

If you are leasing as Michael says the person needs to have a non EU passport. If you are going to do a 5 weeker then this makes good money sense.
It depends a bit on the weather and the season. I would not do this in July or August, just too warm and too many people. I suggest for Normandy try to have base like Bayeux or Cannes which are on the better roads. Appartment, small gite or Chambre d'hotes might be best.
I think Saumur might be a good base for Loire. It is a medium sized town but nice and walkable, though you might prefer Tours
Brittany depends on if you want north or south coast. Quimper is always pretty and St Malo is pleasant and makes for easy access to other places
Bordeaux itself or St Emilion would be good

You'd be hard-pressed to visit Normandy from Cannes. Bayeux is a much nicer town than Caen, as it didn't get bombed to smithereens during the war. But Caen has the remarkable Mémorial musuem, which should not be missed.
I don't think you'll have a problem renting/leasing a car (my parents did it at 80+), and I'd recommend you have one for the whole trip and make it a leisurely ramble through the country.
Only thing I wouldn't do is spend a week in Bordeaux. Maybe 2-3 days. Add the rest onto the Dordogne bit and venture into Languedoc.
Sounds like a great trip!
