If you avoid Diocletian's palace complex (perhaps walk in Marjan park), probably no impact anyway, but there are numerous day trip options. Are you interested in taking a bus somewhere, a ferry to an island, ??? What else is on your agenda?
See http://www.visitsplit.com/en/1332/excursions and feel free to ask about what grabs your eye.

A 1/2 day trip to nearby Trogir, though the ship excursion crowds may be visiting also...By staying a bit out of the center, you can have a restful day at the beach if you choose...a 15-minute walk from mid-city Split. I would suggest a hotel we loved..The 20's classic Hotel Park, situated on Bacvitchi (Bacvice) beach...one of the best in the vicinty...Hotel also has an outdoor pool. I think it's the most charming Split has to offer. You'd almost expect a 1921 Duisenberg to be parked out front! Rates six years ago were quite reasonable (about $125), but today, who knows.(see pic below)
When the crowds leave, then you can head back into town and spend the evening in Split, along the harbor walk, or Diocletians digs, etc.
