Day trip from Colmar to Freiburg im Breisgau
We are trying to devise our itinerary for the second week of our trip to France in
May 2012. The first week will be spent in Paris. We have looked into the Alsace region with Colmar as a base. I am under the impression that it is possible to take a bus from
Colmar to Freiburg and return for a day trip. Has anyone done this? I am not finding
much information about bus transportation between the two cities. Do you think that one day is sufficient time in Freiburg. We have 5 nights with no hotel reservations or set plans right now.

My impression is that one day is sufficient for Freiburg. The cathedral and a walk in the old town between the two remaining and Wilhelmine reconstructed medieval towers will cover it. By car a drive up to the Schauinsland might be worthwhile, although one might find the time to do it with the gondola.

You can buy a daypass called, in German, the "Regio-Elsass" ticket, which covers your round trip - on all bus and transport within Freiburg - and between Freiburg and Colmar. The cost is 11.70 for one, 21 € for 2-5 people. In Colmar, board the Südbadenbus #1076 bus to Breisach and buy the daypass from the driver. Once in Breisach, you can use either the bus or the train to reach Freiburg.
Info and prices in German (sorry, don't know where an English page might be):

I believe that Regioscope (www.regioscope.com) used to have one-day bus tours from Colmar to Freiburg, but I just checked their website and they don't have any listed. Perhaps they don't offer these during the winter. You might check their website and email them and ask if they would have such a tour when you will be there.
