Indeed, I live in Rommeldam, PalenQ, and hetismij or tonfromleiden know exactly where that venerable city is located (btw, in Rotterdam, there is a beautiful monument to the denizens of Rommeldam)

I don't know if I would recommend Kinderdijk, even if it has behemoth windmills.

I would however counsel a trip by the #21 tram to Schiedam for a visit to windmill De Walvisch, one of the many grain mills on Schiedam's ramparts. It's still a working mill and if you ask the miller he'll take you up to the mill attic. Always impressive to see the mechanism at work.

Here's a short movie about mid 20th century tourism to Rommeldam

I was thinking a boat trip thru Rotterdam environs would be cool. If they rented bikes they could take them on the boat and get off and cycle thru the Kinderdijk area which would also be cool. Our bike trips always cycled thru them coming from Dordrecht to Rotterdam and they were a highlight of the trip- those iconic huge mills all grouped together.

But the mill you recommend sounds neat too -more personal with I assume fewer crowds.

Yes, absolutely: take waterbus from Erasmusbrug to Kinderdijk - De Schans, change to Driehoeksveer there and get to Kinderdijk. During the summer months there's a direct service from Erasmusbrug to Kinderdijk, but you need to time it well: it's fairly infrequent.

Because there's an increase of cruise ships stopping at Rotterdam, the place is mobbed. No fun being there, trudging to the bridge to Alblasserdam in a crowd, then trudging back.

You can't stand being pointed out, can you? I always wonder at English language speakers mangling "foreign" place names and such, and thinking that's quite ok.

Happy to be pointed out - but when posting here one may wonder how something is spelt but just writes what he/she thinks- not realizing an extra A in Zaandvort would cause some local to go into conniptions with a rather inflammotory correction -much ado about nothing.
