Yes, it's Vroom and Dreesman (sp?) dept store in Holland as DAX' photos show the view from. Haarlem itself is a fine fine city that i love to stroll around. That Willie Wortels is right by the train station makes it even nicer!

Thank you hopscotch!

I can just see it now, me wandering around Harlaam, asking everyone for the Bijenkorf for the view and being frustrated at every turn

I can see it now...being sure that it is my pronounciation, so writing it down and asking again only to be told that it doesn't exist...scratching my head...but I read that it is the best place to eat lunch and see the view ?!?!

LOL - not the first time such a thing would have happened.

So...where should one go for a decent, filling and inexpensive lunch in Harlaam? And for a view?

BTW - I checked out the Zaanse Schans site. Seems the ferry doesn't begin till 1 April. I will visit on 30 or 31 March, weather permitting. How does one get there?

Also the outdoor museum only opens on 31 March? Is the indoor museum alone worth spending the day on, or would I be better off using my limited time in Amsterdam doing something else?

Zaans Schans is a short walk, no ferry required, from the Koog Zaandijk (sp?) train station, about a 15 minute ride from Amsterdam, just after Zaandam (sp?)

I'm trying to make plans for the future trip, flying in and out of Amsterdam.

The more I read, the more I'm convinced not to spead my time too thin, leave Brussels for the next time, spend all 12 days in and around Amsterdam.

I'm thinking of staying in Amsterdam, Delft, Haarlem visiting museums, taking canal tours, maybe bus tours, train day trips, and of course the flower parade!

Am I right? Or not?

Glad you like the website, FYI it's not my website, though I wished I had that much website talent. BTW, V&D is a very basic dept store, but if you want to take a break at a similar rooftop cafe in Amsterdam, you may be more impressed by the Metz & Co which also has a rooftop cafe facing Keizersgracht.

Hi Faina,

12 days is a long time to spend in Holland. Are you a big fan of the Dutch culture or of Dutch descent? Everything in Holland comes in a much smaller scale, except maybe when it comes to partying. I'd be inclined to include Brussels/Brugge/Ghent with that much time. It all depends on how much you want to see. I'd like to add Den Haag/The Hague to your list, I really enjoy the old town and the new section of Den Haag, more so than Rotterdam. Here's a website for all the bloemencorso in Holland: www.bloemencorso.com

Faina- if so be sure to buy the National Museum Card, sold at museums themselves - bring a small photo or take one in machines - was required when i last bought one. Card is good for one year for most museums in Holland. Including fabulous Frans Hal Museum in Haarlem - in an old convent or some neat old building. Plus Mauritshuis in Hague, etc. Can come and go without waiting in line, etc.

Thanks again DAX. V&D sound just right. I am a basic (read budget) traveller in any case.

FainaAgain,

You might want to consider flying out of Brussels. That is what I am doing.

Amsterdam (&day trips) 5 1/2 days
Brugge 3 days
Ghent 1 day (on way from Brugge to Antwerp)
Antwerp 2 days
Brussels 1 1/2 days

faina: for your plans you may want to consider the Holland Railpass - three days of unlimited travel in longer period for $65 in 2nd class or five days for about $115 - any train any time - viable if going to Delft, Hague, Alkmaar (famous cheese market but also neat old regional town), Hoge Veluwe Van Gogh museum (train portion to Ede-Wengenen sp?) - available thru RailEurope or BETS (800-441-2387), the latter won't charge RE's $15 mailing fee for orders under $200 - think $5 fee and can expertly answer any Dutch rail question. In Holland if only doing a few trips ask for Day Return (daag retour) tickets when buying for a bit cheaper price. Dutch rail site: www.ns.nl

I looove Amsterdam, but 12 days is an awful lot (I could do 12 days in Paris, though). Amsterdam 'sights' will take 2-3 days for most people to be sated. Add another 2-3 days for day-trips and other towns. That's only half your travel time.

Brussels/Bruges/Gent/Antwerp would be good for another 4-5 days or so. I agree with flying into Amsterdam and out of Brussels.

Yeah, in Amsterdam and out of Brussels sounds more logical. But this means I'll miss the April 22 flower parade. My dates are set - April 15-27.

And no, I didn't mean all 12 days in Amsterdam I thought of Haarlem, some other places close to Amst.

A shame you're leaving on Apr 27 as on the 30th, Queens Day in Amsterdam is one fantastic city-wide celebration - the best i've ever seen in Europe.

Can somebody explain me the phenomenon: flying into AMS and out of BRU is cheaper then into BRU and out of AMS?

(Una, thank you, I've looked at this possibility already! doesn't matter how I fly I should be at home on Friday while the holiday is on Monday)
