I have time in my visit to London for a 1 day trip outside of town and am torn between going to Edinburgh, Scotland for the day or to York. Any suggestions wold be appreciated.

Dear Jerry, <BR>I have done a daytrip from London to York and enjoyed it very much. I don't know the train schedules, but if Edinburgh is doable as a daytrip, it would be a long journey for less time than you would have in York. <BR>When I went to York Britrail had a <BR>package deal which included the round trip train fare, suggestions on sightseeing, and also an optional bus trip to Castle Howard which is outside of York and which interested me very much. However, the York Minster and the old sections of York were very much worth seeing on their own.

Jerry, <BR>I have done a "day" trip to Edinburgh a couple of times. Edinburgh is 1 of my favorite places to go in Britain. I am interested in historical things & scenery, & there is plenty of both. (Scenery from the top of Calton Hill is excellent, also from the Castle & near Holyrood Palace.) I haven't been to York as of yet, although that is a place I want to put on my agenda for the next trip, but Edinburgh is doable in a day, in the following manner, as I have done: Took the overnight train from London to Edinburgh. Get into Edinburgh about 6:30am. This was a good time to go to the top of Calton Hill for a view. Spend the day sightseeing along the Royal Mile, do alittle shopping on Princes Street, eat a little food, then catch a train back to London that leaves about 4 or 5pm & you get back to London around 9pm or so. It is a full day, but I totally enjoyed it & IMHO it is worth it.

Jerry, York is charming, haven't been to Edinburgh so I can't offer an opinion, but how about Bath, fascinating Roman ruins and a lovely town.

All are good suggestions, but my money would be on York. Get a train getting you there before midday and one coming back after 1930 and you would still have had a good day there. <BR>www.gner.co.uk for train info. and booking. I used to live up in Yorkshire and often dream of 'Fat Rascals'. Go and taste and all will be revealed. (You can have a nice tea there and take home more stuff at about half the price of the cafe-served items.)
