Danube or Douro for river cruise 2015

My husband and I are trying to decide between the Danube or the Douro for a river cruise in May 2015. Any thoughts?

We really enjoyed our Danube River cruise with Gate 1 last year. We cruised from Nurnberg to Budapest, stopping in Regensburg, Passau, Melk, Vienna and finally Budapest.

Have not done a Douro River cruise yet so maybe someone else can help you with that.

Loved the Danube cruise we did with Avalon. The scenery was outstanding as were all the stops along the way. Don't think you would be disappointed with this choice.

Other than the cities we visited on the Danube, we didn't find it as interesting as other river cruises we've taken. We were disappointed with the scenery. Eager to hear what folks who have taken the Douro cruise have to say as we only did a day trip. We love Portugal so are interested in this trip as well.

Am considering the Douro for next year so no first hand knowledge to share. But a big 'thumbs up' for the Danube cruise (took the same one as BettyK and loved it. ) Although the landscape is, overall, not nearly as scenic as the Rhine, the Wachau Valley landscape was gorgeous in the fall.

The Douro River is quite scenic, but you'll only find smaller villages beyond Porto. Where you go in May will depend on the weather; flooding and rain.

We loved the Danube River Cruise we took with Uniworld. We highly recommend this tour and Uniworld.

Can't comment on the Douro River cruise but recently returned from the Danube which covered Vienna, Budapest & Bratislava
among others. Loved the cruise!
Be advised that boats at times raft up together in ports.
Some posters have found this objectionable esp. if they have verandas but this is the way it is done.

Dear OP, IMHO Danube and Douro cruises can not be compared. Danube flows through central Europe and finds some of the finest European capital cities. OTOH Douro touches only small villages (besides Oporto) in the northern rural Portugal. If you look a diversed cosmopolitan experience, opt for the 1st. If you look for a more relaxed experience with eventually side visits to the Quintas (vineyard farms) from where the port wine comes, opt for the 2nd.

Have to agree with Royal - the Danube is lovely and I've heard good things about Avalon Waterways. Some beautiful scenery and lovely places to visit. Budapest is a must!

I think you are comparing Apples to Oranges.

The two cruises and scenery are different.

If you have never done the Danube..then do the Danube first

There are many port combinations to do along the Danube.

I too, am considering the Douro River cruise and couldn't find any info on it under the 'cruise' forum. Either I don't know how to work the forum or no one has taken the cruise!

I had heard about spring flooding on the Danube and Rhine. Does the Douro get this also? I surely would not want to go in June or July.
