" . . If the governing body in France has the collective will to end certain types of rentals, they can use their enforcement powers to do so . . .And if the income from the rentals is not reported, then the penalties could, for example, be tripled. "

Substitute the word Paris for France and your second paragraph describes exactly what the city is attempting to do.

Frankly, I'm amazed that those of you who make frequent trips to Paris do not understand anything about the city itself, or how its government works.

But then, you really don't care about anything else, so...

PVoyageuse - I worked in the rental industry in Paris for several years. These poor women don't make any money at all and have to provide their own cleaning supplies - the management company they work for takes 60% of the charges billed to the rental client, and they are not protected by the law because they have no papers.

Fuzzbucket : but this is an entirely different problem. It is the job of the Inspection du Travail or of Ursaff and it should not be too hard to accomplish.

The last arguments are going inot the usual US vs stupid Europeans and vice versa.

So : si tu connais pas la loi du pays, tu fais profil bas.
Si tu as des emmerdes, tu ne viendas pas te plaindre. (*)

Bonne journée à tous

(if you don't know the local law, you play it low key. If you have problems, you don't come whining - good day to all).

DonTopaz, I will, yet again, patiently point out that AirBnB isn't in the hospitality industry. So, there is nothing to enforce there. That's one of the genius aspects of their business model. And cracking down of the people AirBnB brings in contact with renters such as yourself, is infeasible, or it would invade privacy to a considerable extent. Bearing in mind that, as kerouac pointed out, as an apartment owner, you CAN rent out your property, within certain reasonable limits.

PVoyageuse - since no one has been inspecting or regulating the vacation rental industry and the people who work in this system, until fairly recently, it is unlikely that the people who work for owners and agencies who flaunt the law will complain. Their jobs are all that matter to them, and many work twice the number of hours legally allowed per week, just to feed their families.

Fuzzbucket : don't tell me the tax officials do not know about these shady practices. They certainly do not need a formal complain to investigate ANY company (as well as your next door baker or butcher). Why don't they do it?
I still don't get what this has to do with the rental situation in Paris.

Pvoyageuze, again, in some areas in Paris, that would mean going door to door almost. Because AirBnB ostensibly isn't about "companies", but about single individuals, or companies masquerading as single individuals.

PVoyageuse - you are intent on continuing an argument that does not exist.

I am not argumenting, I am asking questions and so far you haven't been able to answer them.

Yes you are. And you're barking up the wrong tree. If you are allowed to vote in France, perhaps you should try to change things.

I think that if I had been elected to a position in the French government - and if this position enabled me to do something about the situation - I definitely would have remembered it.
