Venice
We'll be in Venice for about 5 days (have been there twice before years ago so this is mostly for the day trips). A bit conflicted about location. Day trips will be by train so a location not too far from the train would be good. However, we'll be spending evenings in Venice so not too far from St Marks would also be good. How long does it take to get from St Mark area to the train either walking or by Vaporetto?

Perugia
A year or two ago Locanda Della Posta got some good recs. Does that still hold true? Other recs?

Orvieto
Only here one night. It's tempting to visit Orvieto as a day trip from Rome but I like the idea of spending an evening in a smaller town. Close to the upper hill train station would be a good idea.

Rome
We've been to Rome a couple of times but not in the past 12-13 years. Rome was selected mostly for its proximity to Orvieto and for the return flight to the U.S. My wife does have a short list of sights to see / re-see. We may cut this down to 1 1/2 days instead of 2 1/2 days depending upon how the other days play out. No day trips from Rome (unless we change and visit Orvieto as a day trip). Proximity to Spanish Steps, Fountain, Piazza Navonna, etc or reasonably close is good.

The train station is at the bottom of the hill (new town). The funicular station is across the street and goes up to the top. The funicular station at the top is also new town. You are a few blocks from the old town. You want to stay in the old town, not the new town. There are two mini buses (A & B)that depart from the funicular station at the top. These will get you to your hotel no matter what part of the old town (at least very close). Most B&B's/hotels in Orvieto will tell you either bus A or B. The funicular only runs about 8 am to 8pm. It used to be you had to buy a combo ticket (about .25€ more) if you wanted to take the bus once you reached the top.

I've stayed in Orvieto multiple times. There is more than enough to do there for a day and it's wonderful at night.

I can vote for Locanda della Posta for its convenience to the main square, Duomo, restos, bus/taxi stand and escalator down to public parking but I'm in the year or so ago category!

I agree that Locanda Della Posta is very centrally located. I was not thrilled with the room I had there though.

Check slowtrav.com for Perugia hotel reviews. I know there is one that begins with an F (Fortuna?) that is in a nice, central location, is well priced, and has a nice atmosphere. I remember seeing it when I was in the city and wished I had stayed there.

In Orvieto we loved Hotel Virgilio. It is on the main square with direct view of the Duomo.
They also have ac, nice to have if you need it. Parking is across the main square.
The breakfast is very nice. They have a few tables in front of the hotel and you can sit to people watch with a glass of wine if you care to.
Great location.

Venice - We love Palazzo Guardi near Accademia. Close to San Marco & easy to catch vaporetto to station.

Is it noisy in the square? How far is that from the tram from the train station?

Venice:
La Calcina is highly recommended by many Fodorites; don't know if it location works for you, though. It is waterside on the zatterre (sp?). We had a great brunch on their covered terrace outside.

Hotel Riva* is where I stayed with DD a couple of years afo. We had room 1, because we wanted the two-direction view of the little canals which join at the hotel. Singing gondoliers take this route, and we heard one singing Ave Maria on Mother's Day! They glide under your window. Bathroom was tiny, but we liked the location near the Square. Included breakfast.

Casa Rezzonico in the Dorsoduro (sp?) neighborhood. More a residential feel. Charming little place with an inner courtyard garden. Included breakfast.

Rome:
We liked the Domus Julia, sister property to the next door Hotel Julia. Breakfast included in the hotel's pretty dining room. Larger rooms with large en suite baths. Two rooms share one kitchen and sitting/dining room.


All these should be in your price range.

We've stayed at La Calcina a couple of times. I find some parts of Venice to be claustrophobic and dark, but La Calcina's position provides sunshine and open space. The rooms facing the water are the most comfortable but are also the most exposed to noise from water traffic.

What's the difference between the Domus Julia and Hotel Julia?

Myer. That is a shame. There are lots of choices in Orvieto but we really liked this hotel.

Orvieto is a terrific town. We like the Hotel Duomo.

For Perugia, Last October we stayed at Hotel Fortuna for 3 nights -- which zoecat referfences above. Great location. Slightly closer to the main square area then the two you listed above.

Myer, the Domus Julia is set up as apartment-style, because you have the kitchen/dining area to use. DD and I didn't need it, but it is nice to have this extra space.

PS I forgot to mention the Julia's are one block over and below the Spanish Steps. Good location for walking to the sites you mentioned.

In Orvieto we have stayed at Hotel Corso and B&B Valentina. Both were fine.

We love the Hotel Genio in Rome. Th3e location is perfect, right by Piazza Navona.

In Venice, our favorite hotel has been Ca Dei Conti, near San Marco. We have also enjoyed Hotel Bellini next to the train station and Hotel Diana, just steps from San Marco.
