Im fortunate my hnaor drys quite quick when abroad by the time i pluged my hairdryer in its almost dry. regarding curlers I take my butane ones, and by the butane abroad, if its available in one country you can usually find it is available Worldwide, unless it is a very primative country. On saying that I have never had a problem with my electrical products or adaptors that was purchased here in the UK, and has worked fine in Europe and the Carribean.

Are those butane curling irons like butane lighters? If so, I assume they cannot be transported (at least from the US)unless they are empty? can they even be transported that way?????

My butane curling iron (which also has a sort of plastic cage that fits over it to make it a curling brush) comes apart. The top of the appliance and the butane cartridge, which comprises the handle, are stored in separate compartments in a small hard plastic carrying case. I suppose you could take the top without the butane, but I'm not sure you could then buy them in Europe or anywhere else. I have never seen them. Would be very interested to know if others have seen them--the ones that fit my Conair appliance are about 3 inches in length.

Of course, you could also probably mail the cartridges to yourself at your first hotel, but I am just not that organized and make do with a hair dryer.

Has anyone purchased a flat iron in Europe? I'm planning a trip to south of France and Paris and would rather purchase one over there as opposed to here along with adapters, converters, etc. I'm just not sure if they are available.

I know that butane cartridges are available in UK from most Boots (chemist) stores which are nationwide. You could always email the manufactuer to see if they have a list of stockist who may sell the products in the country you are going to be visiting.

Until a few days ago, I thought I didn't have this problem. I have for years taken a dual voltage dryer with a plug adaptor, and used it successfully. But on my recent trip to France this didn't work. The dryer (a recent purchase) would only operate on "low", which was in fact VERY hot, to the point that it made me nervous to use it. The switch actually prevented me from choosing "high" (not that I really wanted to, considering the fire hazard that I already had.!) I suspect that the concierge that nytraveler talked to was right, and the problem is aggravated by the fact that you can hardly buy a dryer with less than 1800 watts in the US. I would have bought a small dryer over there, to keep for future use, but I was unwilling to put much time into shopping for it. So, for my next trip I'll be back to the drawing board!

I think when we go to Germany next year, I will just buy a small hair dryer over there.

I wish we could just air dry, but with my overly curly hair, that isn't going to happen unless I am going to go through Germany with a baseball cap on everyday - LOL.
