Cruising to Naples

We are arriving in Naples by cruise in late April. This is our first time in Italy, and we are only there for a day. What would you suggest we do to most economically spend our time without missing 'must see' highlights?

Pompeii is 30 minutes by train (about 2E) and opens at 8:30. Admission is 11E. That would be my "must see".

You might want to post this in the cruise forum also.

Please be careful wherever you go. I took my mother on a cruise a few years ago and got the bright idea, when we were docked in Naples, that I should take her to Positano, as I love it so much. I thought it would be perfect, so we took a train, then a bus and got to Positano, where I had planned to catch the ferry to Capri where we would meet up with the group from our ship. My mother was making her way down to the ticket booth and I asked for two tickets, explaining my mother was on her way down. It was the last ferry of the afternoon and they refused to hold it for three minutes. We were stranded! A nice gentlemen from England noted our dilemma and somehow got us up the hill and to a taxi, which cost a small fortune, getting us back to our ship just in time. I definitely learned an expensive lesson.

Hi Kent - There are enough must-see highlights in that area to fill a week - so you will have to be selective.

Choose any from: Pompeii, Capri, Amalfi Coast, Ercolano, Vesuvius, Naples, Paestum, Ischia ...

Hope this helps ...

Hi K,

Spend the day in Naples.

See the harbor area and the Castel dell'ovo.

Walk the Via Toledo to the Capella Sansevero and the Archaeological museum.

Visit Spaccanpoli and the Duomo.

Take the funicular up to Castel S. Elmo.

There is more than enough to do for a day.

Save the train rides for when you are actually visiting Italy.

Enjoy your day.
