Croatia Travel Books: Fodor's Has None!
Just wondering what Croatia travel guides folks liked best? Surprisingly slim pickin's on Croatia at the Borders I just went to in NYC.
Am surprised that Fodor's doesn't have a Croatia guide!

I like Footprint's Guide to Croatia. Eyewitness just released their version - which is pretty good. I also like Nelles - somewhat hard to find - very good road maps. Lonely Plant & Rough Guides are some what drab and uninspiring.

Bradt has a Croatia book. I haven't used it, so I can't offer a personal review, but their guidebooks are usually good, though not flashy, and written by people who are actually knowlegeable about the destination.
Also, maybe you already know about it, but check out www.inyourpocket.com.

When are you & Brendon going? Had I known you were going I wouldn't have thrown away all my stuff.
(Hint: Go to library, have them get all the other guide books in the "system"
& you can xerox 2 pages into one due
to small size of the guides).
Have you been to the NYC Tourist
office in Empire State Bldg?(Suite 4003) - they have a font of info & the GM, Nena Komarica is quite helpful.

Rhea,
Thanks for the tip on the office in the Empire State Building – I work only a few blocks away and I’m going to stop by one of these days. We are planning a trip there in September next year.
Hunnym, when are you going? What’s your itinerary?

Though "drab," the Rough Guide is the most interesting reading concerning "contexts," or the history and background of the area.
You might also check out the Automobile Club (AAA). I browsed through a new book of theirs on Croatia the other day.

Thanks, Rhea. The suggestion to pop by the tourist office is an excellent one that I intend to follow.
We are going the last 2 weeks in May06.
I don't know about our itinerary just yet - we will be meeting my parents there (who will be there on an extended trip). I am struggling somewhat as I am really not keen on driving too much, but it seems the best way to go (especially because at times there may be 4 of us). My past experience is that driving along the coast involves a lot of narrow lanes on cliffs, hairpin turns, etc. In and of itself this isn't a problem, but there are some impatient drivers who tailgate and make last-minute lane changes...that's hard on someone like me who's a bit paranoid behind the wheel...

Hunnym,
We’ll probably go the first 2 weeks of Sept – nothing decided for sure yet. Please post a trip report when you come back. I’d be very interested in your driving experience there.
Our plans are to fly into Venice and take a ferry to Rovinj (not sure if this is possible, the 2006 ferry schedule is not out yet). Rent a car in Rovinj, spend 4-5 days in Istria, go to Plitvice lakes then to Trogir – drop off the car there (or in Split). From there down to Hvar and Dubrovnik, rely on ferries and busses.
Have a wonderful trip!

Hunnym- you Will be back in time
for the 6-3 Fodors GTG right? or
should be move the date?
Also, you might want took into "doing
the coastal islands" by ferry as it
appears to be a popular mode of trans. Otherwise, the bus (forget
about a train system) which gets
very mixed reports.
I didn't think the drivers were that
bad (took public bus & cabs) but,
as you know, I was mostly at sea.

Rhea, I am planning on the 6/3 GTG! That's too much fun to miss! Our trip will take place in May.
I am very interested in the ferry route for at least part of the trip, though I hope the summer ferry schedule is running by late May.
