Croatia east of Zagreb

My wife and I are travelling in Croatia for 14 days in the first half of October. We are planning on spending around half that time in Istria, and half going down the Dalmatian coast to Dubrovnik, where we fly out of. We are flying into Zagreb, and I was wondering about travelling east of there for a few days. One of my favorite things to do is to wander around, discover pretty little towns, drive through pretty countryside, etc. Of course we will visit many of the places that are typically recommended, but I would like to get off the beaten path a little too. I have read very little about the country to the east of Zagreb. Would it be a good use of our time to do some exploring over there?

Thank you so much in advance for any advice any one may be willing to offer.

I visited Varaždin and Čakovec in 2009 and enjoyed both

I spent about a day in Varaždin. I thought it a charming university town with a laid-back feeling and enough sites of interest to keep me happily entertained.

I spent just a few hours in Čakovec, which has a stunning art deco palace and a very good ethnography museum.

With only 14 days in Croatia, you will need to be very selective.

I am glad you are planning to visit Croatia. I am from Zagreb (currently living in London)and can recommend many places you might like to visit.
There are charming places in the vicinity of Rijeka or you can proceed to Istria which will be marvellous at this time of the year.
You need two days to explore Zagreb which has a lot to offer, charming medieval town, the market, galleries and museums etc.
Let me know if you are flying or driving to Dubrovnik.
The trip has to be carefully planned in order to see the right places.

Thank you both very much for your ideas. We are driving to and flying out of Dubrovnik, agram. And we are flying into Zagreb. We'll take your advice and plan on about two days there (not nearly enough I know, but there is a lot to do).

Thanks again.
