Croatia and Slovenia

I am going to Croatia for 2 weeks. My itinerary is 2 nights in Split at Le Meridian. 5 nights on Hvar then 1 night on Pag island. 3 nights in Lovrinici (inland Istria) and 2 nights in the Triglav National Park in Slovenia then onto Zagreb for a night to fly home the next am.

I am wondering what people's thoughts are on this itinerary. Must see spots especially islands, restaurants and interesting off the beaten track sites. Your help would be most appreciated...

For this itinerary, I would think that the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet guide books might provide some very useful information.

Have you considered finding time for the Plitvice Lakes? They are spectacular.

I must admit that 5 nights on Hvar would have been WAY too much for me, and I would have liked more than the 3 nights I had in Zagreb -- but to each his/her own!

Enjoy!

Thanx for the response. Yes, I am planning to go the Plitvice when we are in Split. Just curious why you liked Zagreb so much. As far as being on Hvar, we are planning to do day trips to some islands along with Dubrovnik.

That would make for a very long day trip! I think it's about 3 or 3.5 hours each way. It might be worth considering spending a night near the lakes.

I like art and architecture and found a lot in Zagreb that was of interest to me. But we all travel for different reasons.

Have you checked the ferry schedules for the time you'll be there? Hvar is not a particularly convenient base for day trips.

I would skip Split, skip Pag, add days in Dubrovnik and reduce Hvar. One night near Plivitce, skip inland Istria, and spend time in Soca River Valley, Triglav (what are you doing there and where?), Bled and Ljubljana before headin gback to Zagreb.

With only 2 nights in Split, I would reconsider spending all day on a day trip to Plitvice since you'll be heading north anyway, and can probably fit in a visit later.
Why did you choose Pag? I have to add the caveat that I visited 10 years ago and only stayed a day, but it lacked the charm of every other place I have visited in the country. I bought some nice lace though.
I don't know Lovrinici.
I'd love 5 days on Hvar myself--you can visit every town on the island if you rent a car, and find some secluded beaches, visit lavender fields. Day trips are not as easy as you may think, but certainly not impossible. You can pay for an excursion with a tourist office, or just go through Split and take a ferry to Solta or Brac. Dubrovnik is too far though--even if you wanted to drive yourself I think that would be too much time in a car for one day.
Of course we don't know what month you are visiting, and that makes a difference.

Trip to plitvice from Zagreb or on your way to Istria. from Split is loosing of time. beter go to Sibenik and national park of Krka from Split. Hvar : old town, teather, carpe diem, palmizana by taxi boat, wine producers in Sveta nedjelja and lavander fields. Istria: Motovun ,Groznjan, Porec, Rovinj, Lim fjord, Brioni islands, Pula (amfiteather)and old Town. Zagreb: Gric and Kaptol Mirogoj and museum of naive art(tradition).brgds.

Thank you all for the information. This helps with some planning. We will have a car throughout the whole trip. I am going to be going from May 23 -June 7. Any other advice is appreciated...
