Croatia and nearby area

We've just booked a flight to Split at the end of September and would plan to spend three weeks in the surrounding area. We'd really welcome recommendations and ideas of places to visit . At the moment haven't decided whether to hire a car or use public transport so either is possible Thanks a lot for your help

Croatia is a delight! You would, I think, do well to get a good guide book -- the Rough Guide is particularly good for Croatia IME. You might also read some trip reports and planning threads on this forum -- lots of great information in them. Three weeks will give you enough time to see many (not all) of the highlights of the region, so you'll have some wonderfully difficult choices to make. Enjoy!

We stayed in Rovinj and loved it. Also stayed in Piran, on the coast of Slovenia. Piran was good but enjoyed Rovinj a lot more. I've not visited Trieste but if you had time, that's another option.

mhen, we spent a little over two weeks in Croatia, few years ago. We covered a lot of ground back then - three weeks would be great! We flew into Zagreb and out of Dubrovnik. We rented a car, and our high level itinerary (moving north - > south) included multiple bases in Rovinj, Plitvice, Split (& Hvar), Mostar (in Bosnia) and Kotor (in Montenegro), finishing in Dubrovnik. I'm guessing you have some very specific motivations that led you to Croatia, so I'd flesh out those ideas with a good guidebook or two as previously suggested.

If you're into history, don't miss Diocletian's Palace in Split. It's incredible, although it can get crowded. Early mornings are best for exploring. Maybe consider a day trip to Trogir too?

Thanks, Anuj...you can see how much I like to "consult" with your reports when planning!! I'm just playing around with a trip to Croatia (Istria) for next year....I've got a book from the library and will read up..
