Um, The Riva is the promenade that fronts the sea in Split harbour, the town is behind. It is really just a street with lots of cafes overlooking the harbour.
Did you perhaps mean Rijeka which is many miles north of Split, or Rovinji, also way up the coast in the part of Croatia known as Istria?
Where else are you planning on going in Croatia? I saw you posted another thread mentioning Dubrovnik. Will you be travelling by public transport (bus, boat) or will you have a rental car?
Realistically, to get a helpful answer you need to tell us more about your plans, and know where you plan to go.
Riva is not a place.

Thanks for your replies. My husband and I arrive in Dubrovnik Sept 18. We will be in Croatia until Oct. 1. We plan to stay in Dubrovnic until Sept., 22. From there we will travel north. Do we stay in Split, Hvar or Trogir? And if so, for how long? I assume they are within traveling distance of each other. We would also like to see Kotor. How do I work that in? I want to go to Korcula. Do we stay there? And it so, for how long? Should we go to Zadar and stay there? Plitvica and Zadar are on our list as well. I would also like to go to Ljubljana and then to Zagreb. Do we stay in those places and if so, for how long? Is Istria too much to do? We will then head to Rovjin. From there we will ferry to Venice and spend a couple of days there before we head home. Should we rent a car? I thought maybe we should after Dubrovnic. Any recommendations for places to stay. I need to stay in non smoking accomodations. In Dubrovnic we are staying at the Hotel Kazbek.

You need to do some more research before settling on an itinerary. Look at guidebooks and search the Internet. Here at Fodors' site you can look under Destinations and search old threads on this forum for other people's experiences.
You can see the Bay of Kotor as a daytrip from Dubrovnik. Korcula and Hvar are islands. You can go from Dubrovnik to Korcula by Jadrolinija boat or bus. Then there's a catamaran from Korcula to Hvar and on to Split. Trogir is a small town not far from Split and reachable from there by bus.
And look at a map. Plitvice and Zagreb are east of the coast, Ljubljana is well north in Slovenia, another country. Rovinj is on the Istrian peninsula so you'll have to go to Istria for your boat to Venice.
You won't be able to go everywhere on your wishlist (the story of my life). You have to learn more about these places in order to decide which are most important to you. Also later in September the frequency of ferries and catamarans tails off. It's important to pay close attention to the ferry schedules.
