Critique - 2 week Sicily Itinerary -

So, we've decided that moving around more frequently will help us see more in the time we have.

I have put together a draft itinerary and would love to get some input from those that have been to Sicily before. We will have 2 weeks in May 2020 and are a group of 6 adults in our early 60's. We will have a car to get around.

Thoughts or suggestions are encouraged -

PALERMO - 4 nights. It looks like there is a lot to see there. One day trip will be to Cefalu for a slower pace and beautiful beach scene, will also visit Monreale. Would love a recommendation on where to stay here.

ERICE - 3 nights. (San Vito lo Capo, Segesta, Favignana are possibilities to visit not far away)

AGRIGENTO – 1 night (Valley of the Temples)

PIAZZA ARMERINA - 1 night (Villa Romana del Casale)

Stop in Caltagirone for ceramic shopping on way to

RAGUSA – 2 nights (Wine tasting) Recommendations wanted.

ORTIGIA- 3 nights (Noto, Siracusa) Any recommendations on where to stay or what else to see?

Drive to Catania to depart

I tried to structure it to fly into Palermo and out of Catania (based on a recommendation from kja) Is it in the right order? I used michelin maps to guage distances, etc.

Thank you!

I offered one option on your other thread, post # 8.

Thanks kja, again you’re right. I will check out the B&B you recommended for Ortigia. My head is swimming trying to figure things out never having been to Sicily and I feel like we’re late getting started so am a little stressed 😬

You still have a half a year to plan, so my advice would be to calm down and get a good guidebook before you finalize anything. JMO.

I loved the B&B I mentioned, but it might or might not suit you. Definitely stay in Ortigia.

Funny, we did almost the same trip in reverse. We started in Ortigia and ended in Palermo, though we made one more stop for Selinunte. But I think it looks good.

progol, is there anything you would change in hindsight? What were your favorites and where did you stay?
thanks!

We loved Ortigia and I might’ve added a day there; we stayed in Scicli, a smaller of the Baroque towns, and liked it very much. We never made it to Noto, so would’ve liked to have seen it as well. We did, as you are planning, stayed one night in both Agrigento and Piazza Armerina, which seemed fine in the shirt time we were there. We also stayed 2 nights in Selinunte, which we loved, and only 2 nights in Erice, which seemed enough time. We ended with 3 nights in Palermo, and if I had an extra day, we would’ve done a day trip to Cefalu. I will find my report, so you can see where we stayed and my thoughts at the time.

A brief but selective report on our Sicilian sojourn

Progol, I read your trip report and it was wonderful and helpful. I am rethinking a few things about our itinerary now but still researching.

I thought I had already posted this, but it seems to have disappeared.

So, this is the itinerary that we have settled on. Thanks to everyone who commented.

We (my husband and I) may fly from SFO to Milan for a night or two to visit our exchange student we had last year. before we start our Sicily journey,

Arrive on May 9 - Catania Airport (Meet up 2 other couples)
Taormina - 3 nights (Mt Etna, Shopping, Wine Tasting) Staying in Airbnb
Ortigia - 3 nights Staying in Airbnb
Noto - 2 nights (We will be there during the Infiorata di Noto Hotel Gagliardi
Caltagirone 2 nights (Ceramics, Piazza Armerina) Caltagirone B&B
Cefalu - 3 nights (Visit Palermo from here) Airbnb
San Vito lo Capo 3 nights (Family, Erice, Segesta?) Nasea B&B

Fly home from Palermo

If any has restaurant recommendations or what not to miss in any of those towns, we would love them!!

Thank you.

Hi all. This is very insightful to planning a trip around Sicily. I want to start in Taormina or environs and want a villa or apartment. Can anyone recommend another town or area on the outskirts which might be less touristy (read expensive) but still have a way to get to Taormina centre and access to a day tour to Etna? TIA.

@ Redlandsneed -- Please start your own thread! But in answer to your question, look at either Giardini Naxos (below) or Castelmola (above).

@ PSGMARTINO -- I hope you don't mind the digression.
